The variation continues with the strings playing a variation of the woodwind passage. The first variation of this theme ends with the last two "echoes", played first by the woodwinds and then by the strings, in the same order as in the original theme.
Now listen to the entire first theme with its sequence of events: 1) as it appears in the opening of the movement; and 2) as it appears later in its first variegated form.
This is a complete variation, since it matches the entire theme exactly, in length as well as in the sequence of events. As we shall see later, Beethoven varies parts of the different themes; thus, not all the variations in this movement are complete variations;
