  38.      Head, large; body, stout, and covered with a coat of thick hair; ears,
  39. large, slightly acuminated.
  40.      Legs, stout; five toes, furnished with strong curved claws, fitted for
  41. digging.
  42.      Tail, short; mammae, six, two pectoral and four ventral; no glandular pouch
  43. under the tail.
  44.      Omnivorous, nocturnal, but frequently seen wandering about during the day.
  45.      The generic name is derived from the Latin ursus, a Bear.
  46.      Eight species of this genus have been described, three existing in Europe,
  47. one of which, the Polar Bear, is common also to America, one in the mountainous
  48. districts of India, one in Java, one in Thibet, and three in North America.
