GEOS PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE
by Bruce Thomas
On July 2, 2001, Todd Elliott
posted a query to the Homestead
mailing list asking about the
existence of a Missile Command game
for GEOS. Todd felt this would make an
interesting GEOS programming project
if no such game existed. After much
discussion the closest anyone could
come was a geoBASIC sample program
with parachutists.
In June of 2002 I came across a
game called Missile Defense that was
copyrighted in 1991 by a German firm.
Arndt Dettke and Werner Weicht told me
the game was from a set of 4 GEOS
Games Disks released by M&T software.
I contacted the company and, after
dealing with a number of people via
phone and e-mail, I was finally told
the company had no contact with the
authors after all this time and did
not have the right to release the
software to the Public Domain.
I posted a query on my CUE web
site (http://www.edmc.net/cue) asking
for any info or contact with the
authors. After 7.5 months I received
an e-mail from one of the authors who
contacted the others. I soon had their
permission to release the software to
the Public Domain. But, since they
could no longer locate their contracts
they put the onus on me to ensure the
company no longer held the rights and
that this was OK to do. Back to the
fellow at M&T who I had dealt with the
most.
Ten Months went by before I heard
back from M&T, stating that, since the
authors had agreed to release the
software to the Public Domain, they
would consent to this as well.
Arndt Dettke and Werner Weicht
(with help from Colin J. Thomson)
worked diligently to transfer the
German Documentation into English.
Once they sent this to me I was able
to organize the disks (Werner had
provided D64 images of the originals)
and prepare to announce the
availability of the software today at
the EXPO.
Which brings up the next point.
How can a person obtain these 4 disks
with 17 great games for GEOS?
As of today, May 29, 2004 the GEOS
Games Series is available on the EXPO
Edition of the
GEOSPECIFIC PD/Shareware CD.
This CD contains over 80 MBs of
D64 and D81 images of disks full of
GEOS software. Many of the programs
are hard to find (geoCheckBook) and no
longer produced (Dick Estel's Font
Resource Directory complete with
dozens of GEOS fonts). Also included
are...
Complete Collections from
GeoWorld Magazine,
GeoVision International magazine,
Gaelyne Gasson's GeoManiacs
Collection
The geoMetrix GEOS User Group
Randy Winchester's AntiGrav
ToolKit articles from geoWorld
Magazine Graphic
Interpretation columns from
Commodore World and GO64! by
myself (many appearing here for
the first time in English).
Software from notable GEOS authors
as Spike Dethman, Kent
Smotherman, Nate Fielder and
Dave Ferguson
The CD is being offered at a 10%
reduction in cost until June 30, 2004
(US$18 instead of the usual US$20).
Postage in North America is included
in this price. An extra US$1.50 is
required for shipping outside of North
America. If you are at the show you
can pick one up directly from me.
Also, $2.00 from the sale of each EXPO
Edition geoSpecific CD will go
directly to the LUCKY Club to help
cover some of the costs involved in
hosting the EXPO.
But, since the disks are PD they
will also soon be available for
download from the CUE website.

[LOADSTAR EXCLUSIVE:] We have arranged
to have the GEOS Games mentioned here
on LOADSTAR, beginning next month. Our
hope is that we can also develope
BASIC 2.0 or DOTBASIC versions for
non-GEOS LOADSTARites.
