YOUR HOME TOWER NEWS
By Dave Moorman
Now more than ever, you NEED a
CD-ROM on your C-64/128! And, as
promised last month, here are a few of
the Web Sites where C-64 CD-ROMs are
offered. Now, everything that might be
on a CD-ROM will not run on a C=
computer. MPEGS, for example, are
videos -- and we don't have the speed
or memory for that. YET!
However, any disk image file (D64,
D81) can be loaded exactly like a disk
(using a SCSI CD-ROM attached to a CMD
HDD, or a LOADSTAR Home Tower). The
collections are growing every day.
Here is what my Web search came up
with one afternoon:

OK -- perhaps the Web is not your
favorite place to go shopping. But the
point is -- stuff is out there like
never before. Alan Bairstow in the UK
has two collections on CD-ROM, and the
numbers are growing. Get the Home
Tower, and tap into 20 years of
history!
-------------------------
Now on to other stuff. One of the
great features of 64HDD, the program
that drives the Home Tower, is
Partitioning. The concept began with
double disk drives, where you could
choose which drive on the one device
with "0:" or "1:". Creative Micro
Designs used this feature to allow
easy access to multi-partitioned
disks.
In fact, when you boot up the Home
Tower with LOAD"64:*",15 you are using
a partition. I connected partition
number 64 to the disk image that has
all the Tower's working software. Even
the blank disk images are there.
When a system file is needed, I
included "64:" at the beginning of the
file name. It doesn't matter which
Tower device is being used. The
Partition will temporarily use that
device, then quietly return to its
former path.
With 64HDriver, making and going
to Partitions is simple. 64HDD offers
900 Partition numbers, but 64HDD uses
#64 for the boot, and #1 and #2 for
easy switching between disk images for
LOADSTAR issue 48 (which needs two D81
images).
So you have #3 through #63 to
assign to any path you want. For
example, let's put LOADSTAR issue 128
on Partition #3.
1. Set Source to a Tower device that
is pointed to C:/.
2. Move Source cursor bar to $ls64.
Press <RETURN>.
3. Move bar to $121-132. Press
<RETURN>.
4. Move bar to $128.d81. Press
<RETURN>. (You have now
established the PATH to the disk
image you want.)
5. Press <BACK ARROW> and select
Partitions.
6. Choose 2. Make. You will see you
Partition List. Move cursor bar to
the Partition number you want to
use. (You can overwrite existing
Paths.) Press <RETURN>. (<BACK
ARROW> to Escape.)
7. That's it! To go to your Partition
from 64HDriver, choose a Tower
device, do Partitions, 1. Go.
Press <RETURN> to see your
Partition list. Select the
Partition you want. Your Tower
device is set to that Path.
Removing a Partition number is
just like making one.
If you are working outside
64HDriver, you can use C=DOS commands
to Add (Make), Change (Go), or Delete
(Remove) Partition connections. You
have Partitions #65 through #899 to
work with.
First, you must establish a Path
to the desired disk image. You can do
this with LOAD"$",dv, then LIST to see
which $directory you want to go to.
Then LOAD"$directory",dv, and continue
until you are in the desired disk
image.
ADD Partition
OPEN1,dv,15,"APn":CLOSE1
where dv is the device pointing to
the disk image
and n is the Partition number.
CHANGE Partition
OPEN1,dv,15,"CPn":CLOSE1
where dv is the device to be changed
and n is the Partition number.
DELETE Partition
OPEN1,dv,15,"DPn":CLOSE1
where dv is any Tower device
and n is the Partition number to
delete.
Be sure to check your 64HDD manual
for more specific instructions and
error channel messages.
