Holly is on the Arkansas River and
the old Santa Fe Trail passed through
here on the south edge of town. The
Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe
Railroad built their old main line
along the famous trail, reaching
"Holley Ranch" in 1886. The town was
not incorporated until 1903.
The red brick ATSF Depot was once
the gateway to the rest of the world.
The Railroad wanted to destroy it a
decade ago, but the Town of Holly
bought and refurbished the building to
become the town offices.

Leiker's Merchantile is caddy-
corner from the depot. Once a livery
stable, then a mule barn, the building
became a feed and seed emporium. If
Leikers didn't have it, they could get
it. If they couldn't get it, you
probably didn't need it anyway.
The building is empty now. This
photo-impressionist rendering brings
back some of the glory of livelier
days.

Downtown Holly isn't Manhattan.
It's not even Manhattan, Kansas! But a
hardy group of local business people
keep things going. The Commercial Club
meets every month for lunch (at the
Methodist Social Hall) and sponsors a
newsletter, Holly Day, the Holly
Hock-it Day, and Christmas events.
The Holly Fair is the longest
running fair in Colorado. Once upon a
time, when Kansas was "dry", the town
had five bars and three package liquor
stores. During the 1970's, the Gateway
Downs horse race track brought a lot
of income to the community.
Life is quieter now.
