  3. "Now isn't that something?" happily
  4. said the lieutenant.
  5. <w>
  6. <d2>
  7. <t2>
  8. "Here, Lieutenant, try this...." Rich
  9. reset the computer, gave a command,
  10. <w>
  11. <d4>
  12. <t3>
  13. and beautiful music started playing
  14. out of a THX stereo system, virtually
  15. shaking the mansion to its foundation.
  16. <l6lfr2.shp>
  17. <w>
  18. <d1>
  19. <t2>
  20. "Is that from the Commodore?" shouted
  21. the lieutenant.
  22. <w>
  23. <d2>
  24. <t4>

  26. Rich turned down the volume on his
  27. remote.
  28. \
  29. <w>
  30. "Yes, Lieutenant, piped through this
  31. MIDI interface through that MIDI
  32. synthesizer and into my stereo
  33. system."
  34.
  35. <w>
  36. <d1>
  37. <t2>
  38. "Amazing," spoke the lieutenant in
  39. wonderment.
  40. <w>
  41. <d4>
  42. <t2>
  43. A reset, a command, and the lieutenant
  44. was into Wheels.
  45. <w>
  46. "Ah, this looks like that department
  47. store computer."
  48. <w>
  49. <d2>
  50. <t4>
  51. "You're looking at what is called the
  52. Dashboard, Lieutenant. From here, you
  53. can publish, cruise the Internet,
  54. word-process, do your finances, etc."
  55. <w>
  56. <d4>
  57. <t4>
  58. And Rich led the lieutenant from one
  59. application to another. After what
  60. seemed hours, the lieutenant finally
  61. declared,
  62. <w>
  63. <d1>
  64. <t3>
  65. "Sir, this is really something. I can
  66. use it for business and for
  67. enjoyment."
  68. <w>
  69. <d2>
  70. <t1>
  71. "You really like it?"
  72. <w>
  73. <d6>
  74. <t1>
  75. "Yes, sir!"
  76. <w>
  77. "It's yours."
  78. <w>
  79. <d1>
  80. <t2>
  81. The lieutenant's eyes grew big, "No...
  82. no... sir... I can't..."
  83. <w>
  84. <d6>
  85. <t3>
  86. "Lieutenant, it's yours. The whole
  87. thing. Don't worry; I have a warehouse
  88. of these."
  89. <w>
  90. \
  91. "Well, I don't know what to say, sir."
  92. \
  93. <w>
  94. \
  95. "'Thank you' is appropriate."
  96. \
  97. <w>
  98. <d1>
  99. <t3>
  100. The lieutenant enthusiastically
  101. shook Rich's hand, "Thank you... thank
  102. you."
  103. <w>
  104. <d2>
  105. <t2>
  106. "I'll ship it to your house," Rich
  107. said.
  108. <w>
  109. <d1>
  110. <t3>
  111. "I've got to go, sir, and have a word
  112. with my captain." He started walking,
  113. Rich following him.
  114. <l0m.mc4>
  115. <w>
  116. <d6>
  117. <t2>
  118. "Lieutenant, by the way, what happened
  119. with the case of Jeri's death?"
  120. <w>
  121. "Oh, I didn't tell you, sir? She was
  122. electrocuted."
  123. <w>
  124. "Electrocuted? I told her to be more
  125. careful."
  126. <w>
  127. <d1>
  128. <t2>
  129. "Oh, it wasn't an accident, sir. It
  130. was a homicide. Good day, sir."
  131. <w>
  132. <d2>
  133. <t3>
  134. And the lieutenant left through
  135. the front door, Rich staring after
  136. him.
