The lieutenant pressed on, "And where
was Jeri at the time?"
<w>
<d2>
<t1>
"She was down on the floor, too,
<w>
<t3>
but then had to run back to her room
to tweak the CommodoreOne prototype
before bringing it down.
<w>
She never came back. That's when the
Expo organizer went to the room and
found her body.
<w>
We were all shocked... very much
shocked." Rich turned silent and bowed
his head.
<w>
<d4>
<t2>
"Well, thank you very much, sir. You
were a great help."
<w>
<t3>
Rich's face feigned curiosity,
"Lieutenant, do you know how she
died?"
<w>
<d1>
<t2>
"Forensics is on that, sir. I'll
let you know."
<w>
<d2>
<t4>
The lieutenant raised his hand in
a half-wave and shuffled out the hotel
room door. Rich let out a breath and
smiled to himself.
<w>
<d3>
<t3>
Then the lieutenant came back through
the door, "I just thought of
something, sir..."
<w>
<t3>
"This CommodoreOne prototype... was
Jeri the only one working on it?"
\
<w>
<d2>
<t1>
"Yes, she was, Lieutenant."
<w>
<d5>
<t1>
"No help from anyone?"
<w>
<t2>
"None, Lieutenant. I offered my help,
but she didn't accept it."

<t4>
"Interesting," the lieutenant
scratched his head, "Interesting.
Well, good-bye, sir," and he shuffled
out again.

The old Renault stumbled and
sputtered up Rich's semi-circular
driveway.
<p400>
<d5>
<t3>
It finally died to a stop. The
lieutenant got out of the driver's
seat and clanged the car door shut.

The butler answered the door and
ushered him into the front room, where
Rich was waiting.
<w>
<d5>
<t2>
"Lieutenant," he beamed, "welcome to
my abode."
<w>
<d1>
<t2>
"This is some place, sir," said the
Lieutenant in astonishment.
<w>
<d2>
<t3>
"With all the money I save by using
Commodore computers, I can afford this
spread," laughed Rich,
<l5br w f l.shp>
<w>
"Lieutenant, I'm going to make you
into a diehard Commodorian."
\
<w>
<d4>
<t1>
"Well, sir, I'm all for it."
<w>
<d5>
<t3>
They entered the grand room. The
Lieutenant exclaimed, "Sir, this room
is bigger than my entire house!"
<w>
"And look, Lieutenant. There is every
possible Commodore set-up ever made --
\
<w>
C64, C64GS, C65, VIC-20, PET
2001, B128, C128, C128D, C128DCR..."
\
<w>
Rich went on and on, leading the
lieutenant to each set-up, each in
perfect working condition.

"You're proud of your Commodores,
aren't you, sir?"
<w>
<d4>
<t2>
"Lieutenant, I've spent my life
dedicated to these machines."
<l5computer.shp>
<w>
<d5>
<t3>
They stopped by the C128 set-up.
"This looks like the computer for you,
Lieutenant. Here, sit down, try it."
<w>
<d4>
<t1>
"Sir... uh... uh... I'm not sure..."
<l4flcomp.shp>
<w>
<d2>
<t1>
"Go ahead. It won't bite."
<w>
<d4>
<t3>
"I have the RAMLink already loaded
for you. Here, try Test Drive. Use
the joystick." Rich typed a command.

The monitor screen glowed with the
game, the lieutenant driving the
simulated car until the simulated
police car caught him.
