NEW_PICTURE_SET_UP.DOC
----------------------
The easiest way to teach you how to use A-Render is to show you.
We will make a heart similar to the one in the demo, using the programs
Digi, Lathe, Define, Render, and Edworld. You will find it much easier
to understand A-Render once you go through this step-by-step tutorial.
These same steps are used for starting any new picture.
Steps for starting our heart picture:
1. type 'makedir Heart' (Makes a working directory, use capitals)
2. type 'cd Heart' (Change our picture dir to be our current dir)
(next time you use A-Render, just 'cd HEART' to get back to this
HEART working directory, don't do the 'makedir HEART'.)
A-Render uses directories for organization. For example, View
data is stored in the VIEWS subdirectory. Each image or animation
you create should have it's own subdirectory.
3. Create a world file for the heart by following the next instructions.
Using EDWORLD to create or edit world files.
Only the programs Define and Render use the world file. Understanding
the world file is key to using A-Render. When Define or Render are started,
they get filenames and option settings from the world file. We will learn
more about the world file in the DOC file A-RENDER.DOC. For now, follow
these steps:
1. Type 'edworld heart'
You will get the message "Couldn't open world file ", this is because
there was not a file named 'heart.world' present. Edworld, Define,
and Render will all automatically add the .world suffix to the
filename. (you don't have to type it in.)
2. The frame count will be 0. Type '2' to add a frame to the world file.
Type '1' because we want to add a frame starting at frame 1.
3. Now we need to edit the frame we have inserted. Type '1', for edit,
then '1' for frame 1.
4. Type in the values as follows when prompted:
a. Print level 0
b. Render mode 1
c. Intensity multiplier 12
d. Resolution multiplier 6
e. Shadows on 1
f. Start line 0
g. Transparency 0
h. Physical file name heart.phys
i. View file name /VIEWS/front
j. Light file name heart.lights
k. Picture file name heart.1
5. Type '4' to list the frame.
6. You may re-edit the frame if you made a mistake.
7. Type '5' to exit, then '1' to save the world file. Typing '5' '0'
gets you out without saving the file, in case you want to start over.
