  1. Copy protection:

  3. The first time you play the game after installation, you will
  4. be prompted to look up a word in the manual during the first
  5. operating round.  Once this has been verified, you will never
  6. need to worry about copy protection again unless you copy the
  7. program to another machine or reinstall it.

  11. Sound cards:

  13. If you wish sound to work, be sure to configure the sound in
  14. the SOUND.EXE program (which is automatically run at the end of
  15. installation procedure, or you can run it yourself later to
  16. change sound configuration).

  18. BY DEFAULT, 1830 WILL BE CONFIGURED TO NOT USE SOUND.  You
  19. should explicitly set which sound card you are using.
  20.  
  21. The utility program SOUND.EXE does not do hardware auto-detection.
  22. It will look for a BLASTER environment variable having been
  23. defined (by your AUTOEXEC.BAT typically), e.g.
  24.  
  25. set blaster=a220 i5 d1 t3
  26.  
  27. and derive address, IRQ, DMA values from that for the sound blaster.

  31. During the Auction of a Private Company Bidding Round, the mouths of
  32. the Auctioneer and the Barons will move to indicate the placement
  33. of a bid.  YOU WILL NOT HEAR DIGITIZED VOICES!!

  37. Changing your mind about which Baron to play:

  39. Hit ESCAPE if you decide you want to undo your click selecting
  40. a Baron in a new game.

  60. Saving disk space:

  62. You may delete the file OPENING.LBX if you wish; this is
  63. the opening animation of the train coming at you.  Deleting
  64. this animation will free up about 4.5 MB of disk space.

  68. Regenerating the same random map:
  69.  
  70. Whenever a random map is generated (by starting a game with the
  71. random map option on), a file called LASTSEED is created in your
  72. 1830 directory.  If you like a random map and would like to
  73. play it again, execute the DOS command:
  74.  
  75.   COPY LASTSEED READSEED
  76.  
  77. and then rerun 1830.  The program will read the random seed from
  78. the file READSEED if it exists, thus repeating the same map again
  79. for you instead of making a new random map.  You may save several
  80. seed files with whatever other name you like, or write down the
  81. seeds (you can TYPE LASTSEED; it's a plain text file) and create
  82. READSEED yourself with a text editor.

  86. QEMM note:
  87. Some machines using QEMM with the stealth option won't be able
  88. to run 1830.  If you have trouble running 1830 with QEMM, try
  89. disabling stealth, or just use DOS's EMM386.EXE.

  93. CD-ROM version only:

  95. When you install, you have 2 options:
  96.  
  97. (1) Install entire game on hard disk:
  98. PROS: Faster to start program, doesn't require CD-ROM in drive to play
  99. CONS: Takes up more hard disk space
  100.  
  101. (2) Install minimal files needed on hard disk:
  102. PROS: Takes up less hard disk space
  103. CONS: A little slower to start program, requires CD-ROM in drive to play
  104.  
  105. If you later decide to change your installation, you should delete
  106. the 1830 files from your hard disk and rerun INSTALL from the
  107. CD-ROM.  Don't attempt to simply copy or delete files yourself; it's
  108. subtler than that.  (Save the file FAME if you wish to preserve your
  109. Hall of Fame scores, and put it into the newly installed version
  110. yourself if you wish.)
