What is CWAC?
CWAC, pronounced "quack", is Cool Wave Archive Converter. An
automation package that assists your conversions of archives, or
files into archives. This is all achieved with a simple GEM
interface with interlaced help screens to guide you along the
way. Conversions can be made from ARC, ARJ, LZH, ZIP, and ZOO,
and converted to ARC, LZH, ZIP, or ZOO. You can also convert any
groupings of files with a common extension. For example, if you
want to take a bunch of *.TXT files and convert them to single
archive files, CWAC will do it for you.
For Express or RATSoft owners, conversions also maintain your BBS
system files. For Express, it will handle your description
files, and for RATSoft, it will handle all of your file area data
files. Selection of conferences and file sigs is done with a
simple GEM interface. Just click on the areas you want to
perform the conversions on and voila. You are also provided the
option to enter conversion in standard mode in case you wish to
have a path converted without the handling of data files.
CWAC will maintain the date/time stamp of the original archive
file if you wish it to do so. This is a very helpful feature,
especially for the SysOp of a bulletin board system. Why have
all of the files that you convert showing up as new files when it
is not necessary?
You can also have up to 5 files included with each converted
file, and you can have up to 5 files eliminated from each
converted file before it is packed back up. Imagine being able
to take out the ads for BBS's that you are tired of seeing!
What follows is the on-going chart of updates and enhancements to
CWAC. Only version 3.00 beta will receive public release.
Version 3.01 and above are only released to registered users of
CWAC.
CWAC Updates:
Version 3.00beta (3.01)
-----------------------
Added procedure tracking for increased error control, should an
error arise.
Added memory checks for users of STZIP 2.2. This program now
requires over 512K to be executed, which can pose a problem for
users of a 1 meg machine operating a BBS system. CWAC will now
issue warnings during setup for low memory, and will indicate
possible memory problems if an error occurs during a conversion
involving STZIP.
Decreased the amount of memory CWAC uses by about 80K.
Added the option to have files added to or removed from archives
during the conversion process.
Added searching, jumping, printing, and page deletion to the log
viewer.
Increased overall logging of activities.
Completed handling of command line operation. It is complete,
though not available.
Split the resource package in two to allow use of color and
hatches in medium resolution, while still maintain readability in
high resolution. If it weren't for Hursh, this would have taken
longer. Grin.
Optimized the conversion code for the umpteenth time for speed
and reduced duplication.
Have put on hold, indefinitely, the addition of optional
conversion modules. This would entail more than I care to
undertake unless this package becomes successful.
Incorporated digitized sounds.
Added color flow to the title screen.
Added Accessory Access for those requiring this feature.

NOTICE
All versions after 3.01 are not available for downloading. The
only way to receive them is to register and have it mailed to you
through US mail. Each registered version is customized to the
person registering.

----------------
Version 3.02beta
----------------
Working date: 7/5/93
Registration amount remains at $10 US ($12 US if you do not
supply the disk and self-addressed-stamped-envelope for return
mailing of registered version)
Installed option to have date/time stamp of old archive
maintained on converted archives. User selectable for each
conversion entry.
Added conference/sig selection screens for Express and RATSoft.
Added option to have the log file trimmed in 5K increments from
10000-50000 bytes. This is the result of a user request (I'm
sorry, but I forget who it was). You are shown when the trim
occurs each time you adjust the log file length. If you have
your log size set to 15000 bytes, the trim occurs at 17500 bytes.
If you set to 20000 bytes, the trim occurs at 22500 bytes. As
you can see, it is hard-wired to trim at 2500 bytes above the
size you select. This will allow for reasonable growth between
trimmings.
Completed registration kit. At present, no features are disabled
on non-registered version because no public release is scheduled.
Version 3.02 and above are only scheduled for release to
registered users of CWAC.
Fixed a couple of bugs in spacing that appeared in the viewing
module for conversion data.
Fixed the bug that caused errors when entering the log viewer
after executing a conversion. Stupid bug, but it happens.
Completed BBS Express options: Conversion will convert the
archives, rename the description files, overwrite the originals,
and maintain the time/date stamp of the originals. You may
change these options as you see fit. It was suggested by Terry
May to have the time/date stamp maintained so that files would
not appear as new in the download listings. Suggestion taken and
implemented.
Beginning addition of an 'abort conversions' feature. It was
suggested that the user have the option to abort a conversion in
process. While I do not feel it necessary to abort a conversion
on the current file, it does make sense to be able to abort
between files. This will be in before the official release of
3.02.
Delay on the examination of the original documentation for CWAC
may cause it to not be immediately included with the release of
3.02. Several features have been updated and included in 3.02
that were not documented in the original documentation.

Version 3.02
------------
Scheduled release: 7/23/93
RATSoft module is on temporary hold. Some of the work is
complete. Announcements of a new version of RATSoft has put a♪wrench in the works. Not to mention the author must have seen
CWAC and is now seeming to include most of the functions of CWAC
internally.
Express modules are 100% complete.
Fixed a bug that caused havoc for an afternoon. It was not
possible for you to perform conversions on your rebuild
directory, yet I was allowing you to set that up as a source
directory for conversions. Bug has been found and squirted with
Raid.
Updated documentation may or may not be included with the updated
version initially. I am working on catching them up, but I
really hate doing docs. I try to make the program straight
forward enough that they are not really necessary.
Log file operations have been expanded to record the amount of
bytes saved or lost during a conversion. This information will
also be available during a conversion. The bytes saved or lost
on the last conversion will be displayed on the screen for you to
see.
The hidden accessory box on the main menu has now been made
visible. Clicking on it will give you access to the accessory
menu and there is an option to call a file selector, so you can
use file selectors like UIS III or LGS to do file operations.
These accessory boxes have been there since 3.00, but a couple of
the beta testers forced me to make them visible.

W A R N I N G !!!!!!!

I spend about an hour on the phone with a user who was having
consistent errors while running CWAC. It appeared to actually be
a CWAC error so I was evaluating the code operations as he was
running the program on the other end of the line. At the end of
the hour, I finally asked what was in the AUTO folder. Turned
out that he was running with TOS 1.06 and had the TOS 1.4 fix and
the Poolfix programs in his AUTO folder. As these programs are
not necessary in TOS 1.06, they caused a MAJOR memory glitch and
resulted in continual bombs when CWAC was running. Please do
yourself a favor and examine what you run in your AUTO folder
before giving up on any program. AUTO folder programs are
usually something that is memory resident from the time it is run
until the time you turn off the computer. Another common culprit
is the accessories that you run. They remain memory resident
also. Anything that remains in memory constantly is capable of
causing major conflicts with other programs.
****************************************************************
A hearty "Quack" to those who have registered CWAC during this
initial release phase. Please send your request for upgrades to♪3.02 when you are ready. An upgrade request is to include your
name, address, phone number, BBS name (if applicable), BBS phone
number (if applicable), a 3.5" formatted floppy (720K please),
and a self-addressed-stamped envelope. If I do not already have
your registration on file, don't send me a request for upgrade,
send me your registration with the shareware fees.
Registration for CWAC is $10 ($12 if you do not wish to supply a
disk and return envelope or if you wish to use a Gift-Of-Time on
GEnie). Please note that you must fill out and fmail me the
registration form if you wish to use the Gift-Of-Time. I will
not mail your registered copy to you until I receive it.
The response has been adequate enough to keep me interested, but
I must admit that some registrations would be nice. To date,
including CWAC 2.04, CWAC has received a grand total of 8
registrations. As I work to enhance CWAC, perhaps the hold-outs
will work to enhance this number.
