Introduction Welcome to CK: MIDI! 1.0. CK: MIDI!
is designed to allow a variety of MIDI
tests to be quickly and easily
performed. With CK: MIDI!, verifying
your MIDI equipment is a snap.
If you are new to Atari computers, it is
a good idea to read the Owner's Manual
that was included with your Atari
computer. At the very least, you should
be familiar with the basic operation of
your computer: using the mouse to
select items and programs for various
purposes and, how to organize and find
files. You should also be familiar with
the terms associated with using your
computer, such as clicking and dragging.
Additionally, you should be familiar
with the proper method for linking your
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital
Interface) equipment with MIDI cables.
What You Need You can run CK: MIDI! on Atari computer
with at least 512K of RAM and TOS in
ROM. Single or double sided floppy disc
drives may be used, as well as hard
discs. When running, CK: MIDI! uses
approximately 15K of RAM.
The CK: MIDI! The CK: MIDI! package you have received
Package should include the following files:
CKMIDI.PRG, CKMDI2.RSC, CKMIDI.DOC (the
document file you are currently
reading). Since CK: MIDI! is
constantly being updated and improved,
the package may also contain a file
called README.1ST. The README.1ST file
contains special updates and addendums
to this manual and should be read before
continuing with this manual.
3
Installing CK: MIDI! Using the GEM desktop, copy the files
CKMIDI.PRG, and CKMDI2.RSC to the
directory folder you'll wish to use.
CK: MIDI! does not have any special
requirements as to which folder it is
placed in, so long as all of it's files
are in the same folder.
Using CK: MIDI! To start CK: MIDI!, double click on
it's program icon. After a few moments,
the Main dialog box will be displayed on
the screen. The Main dialog box
contains a Status box in the center,
which CK: MIDI! uses to communicate
information to you, and a set of six
command buttons which allow you to
control CK: MIDI!'s functions. All
activities, such as starting tests, and
checking MIDI files will be controlled
from this Main dialog box.
Button: About... The About... button provides information
about CK: MIDI!, as well as various
methods you can use to contact the
author for questions, comments, or
ShareWare contributions.
4
Button: Display MIDI The Display MIDI button starts the MIDI
receive mode, which displays MIDI
commands as they are received. The MIDI
commands can originate at a keyboard,
drum machine, sequencer, another
computer, or most any device equipped
with a MIDI Out port. CK: MIDI!
recognizes the following MIDI commands:
Note On, Note Off, Poly Key Pressure,
Control Change, Program Change, Channel
Pressure, Pitch Wheel, System Common
Messages and System Exclusive Messages.
At this time, System Real-Time Messages
are not displayed, though they are
recognized.
Note On: This message is generated when
keys are pressed on the (MIDI) keyboard.
Note Off: This message is generated
when a key is released on a keyboard. A
Note On message with an attack velocity
of 0 is a synonym for Note Off.
Poly Key Pressure: This message is
generated to report the amount of
pressure being applied to a key.
Control Change: This message is
generated whenever the player makes a
change to an instrument's controller(s).
Program Change: This message is used to
change the preset sound on a MIDI
instrument. It may also be used to
alter other presets on a MIDI device.
Channel Pressure: This message is
similar to Poly Key Pressure in that it
is used to report an amount of pressure
being applied. Unlike Poly Key
Pressure, however, Channel Pressure
affects the entire MIDI channel, rather
than a single key.
Pitch Wheel: This message is generated
whenever the pitch bend wheel on an
instrument is moved.
System Common Message: This message is
displayed by CK: MIDI! whenever any of
the following Sys-Com messages are
5
Button: Display MIDI received: MIDI Time Code Quarter Frame,
(Continued) Song Position Pointer, Song Select, Tune
Request, or End of Exclusive (EOX).
System Exclusive: These messages allow
special commands, data, and other
information to be transmitted to and
from a specific manufacturer's
equipment.
The MIDI commands are displayed in the
Status box in the center of the Main
dialog.
While in Display MIDI mode, the mouse
will not be active. Press any key on
the computer keyboard to end the Display
MIDI mode.
Button: Play MIDI This button causes a brief melody to be
played, which can be used to verify that
an instrument is receiving MIDI messages
and processing them. Only Note On
messages are sent to the connected MIDI
devices. All other settings on the
connected device(s) remains unchanged.
Button: Test MIDI This button is used to test a MIDI cable
Cable to verify that it is in a condition
suitable to transmit MIDI information.
To perform this test, first connect one
end of the cable to the MIDI Out port on
the computer. Next, connect the other
end of the cable to the MIDI In port.
Finally, click on the Test MIDI Cable
button to check the cable. A Pass or
Fail message will be displayed in the
Status box at the center of the Main
dialog box. The button may be held down
for a rapid succession of tests, each
showing Pass or Fail.
6
Button: Test MIDI This button allows you to check a file
File to see if it is a MIDI Format File, and,
if it is, determine whether the file is
a format 0, 1, or 2 file.
After clicking on the Test MIDI File
button, an file selector will be
displayed, which you may use to enter
the name of the file to be checked. The
Status box will display the results of
the test, either indicating that the
file is not a MIDI file, or the format
type.
Button: Exit This button is used to end the current
session of CK: MIDI!, and returns you
to the desktop, or to the program that
was used to start CK: MIDI!, such as
AS/X
