Greets. This is the doc file for a nifty little program that needed
to be written. After a conversation with Rich on the subject of TOP
Download listers I was presented with a pretty bleak selection of
programs to generate my much desired TOP DL lists.... I pondered...
and pondered... a few more times for proper effect please. hehehe
Anyway,
I needed something easy to setup and maintain, effective and
informative. This is what I came up with. It's called Top Download
Tracker and it fills all of the requirements.
It has a CONFIG file called TOP_DL.CFG that must be located in the
same directory as TOP_DL.PRG. I won't go into it here but the
instructions on what to place in the CFG file are in the CFG file!
Grab your favorite text editor and EDIT it after you read this.
Here is what you can tell the program to do:
--------------------------------------------
How many files to include in the TOP Downloaded report. Example: Top
10, Top 20 etc. The range is 1-100.
Which file sigs to create TOP Download lists for.
Where to place the TOP Download reports example: e:\top_dl\.
Of course you can pres ESC while the program is running to Shut it
down.
Installation:
-------------
Make a Folder somewhere on your Hard drive and place This DOC file,
the CFG file and the .PRG in there. Also the Script file TD.SCR
should be placed in this same folder.
Edit the CFG file to suit your tastes.
Add it to your BBS script someplace. I run mine from the ISIS
SHELL.TTP with an * in front of the program name so it only runs once
a day.
HINT - You can run it from anything, anytime. I am hoping that ISIS
Node 14 will write a script interface for viewing the reports this
program generates. Why? I want to see what he comes up with.
This program is NOT a viewer, it only generates PURE text reports that
can be easily read by most anything. Thats why its so small and fast.
Thats all for installation.
If something is NOT configured correctly, the program will Bitch at
you, tell you whats wrong and gracefully shutdown. No muss, no fuss.
General Info:
-------------
The Reports it generates are saved with the filename: TOP_DL.[x] where
[x] is the number of the file Sig that this report pertains to. This
way you can easily tell which filename goes with what file sig! The
name and number of the file sig IS stored in each report so your users
will know what they are looking at.
The reports will be stored in whatever folder you specify in the CFG
file.
Empty file SIGS will not have any reports generated.
If you need something changed, or catch a bug(eeeeek!) Tell me and I
will kill it. I have tested the crap out of it and have not been able
to make it fail yet.
It gets your FILE SIG info from your SYSDATA.DAT file which RICH
provided the source code for reading for which I am grateful.
Otherwise it would have been more work for me. <grin> Dont fear, your
Sysdata.dat is only opened with READ access. It will not be harmed in
the least bit. Or, you can just put a copy of your SYSDATA.DAT file
in the same folder as this program.
I left the display pretty plain since I was trying to keep the size of
the program down and certain sysops dont care for snazzy graphics
anyway.
You may run the program as often as you wish. Once a day should be
sufficient.
BE SURE TO ENJOY IT.
