  2.  To upgrade from versions 1.85 thru' 2.01:

  4.  1) Make copies of these files from your old version in a holding
  5.     directory structure separate, distinct and apart from the
  6.     directory you will install the program in:
  7.  
  8.     term.cfg
  9.     smartpad.txt
  10.     term.log
  11.     term.tet
  12.     \HOST\users.dat
  13.           users.sec
  14.     \MAIL\areas.cfg
  15.     \MAILER\mailer.log
  16.             mailer.cfg
  17.             mailer.evt
  18.             request.lst
  19.     \PHONES\*.fon
  20.             *.kbd
  21.             *.xlt
  22.             *.cst     where * is replaced with the name of any of the
  23.                      files with these extensions that you have changed
  24.     \QWK\qwk.cfg
  25.          qwk.tag
  26.          qwk.nam
  27.     \SAM'ED\areas.cfg
  28.             origins.txt
  29.             samed.cfg
  30.             samed.lst
  31.     \SCRIPT\*.rsl    where * is replaced with the name of any of the
  32.                      example script files we supplied that you have
  33.                      customised.

  35.  2) Install the latest version in your old directory and answer A for
  36.     Always to the question "Overwrite? (Yes/No/Always/Quit) [N]"

  38.  3) Copy your old files that you preserved in step (1) above back into
  39.     the directory structure either over-writing the newly installed
  40.     files or renaming as you think appropriate.

  42.  To upgrade from versions older than 1.85

  44.  Start over!

  46.  You MUST start afresh with a new directory structure separate, distinct
  47.  and apart from the directory structure you have your obsolete versions
  48.  of Terminate already installed in.

  50.  Sorry, but we have greatly improved the program adding, amongst
  51.  other features, multi task-windows, greatly improved IEMSI capable
  52.  MiniHost with QWK Mail Door, QWK'em Offline Mail Reader, Fax Manager,
  53.  RIPscrip 1.54 graphics in both Terminal and QWK'em, REXX-like Script
  54.  Language for DOS full scripting (RSL), Prestel/Viewdata, etc, etc so
  55.  none of your old phonebook structures, configuration files, etc, etc,
  56.  remain compatible.

  66. At the Operating System prompt, enter: INSTALL

  69. environment if you have OS2COMSPEC set and act accordingly))

  77. After a successful installation, enter:         T.BAT
  78. and the first time the program runs it will attempt an intelligent
  79. configuration.

  81. For people who don't know much about serial communication and modems:
  82. - don't worry about all the options!
  83.  
  84. IMPORTANT: If you don't understand a toggle or option do not change it
  85.            - just leave it as it is. The options have already been set
  86.            to give the best performance for the majority.

  90. All options have been set as sensible defaults for normal use, and
  91. there is no immediate need to change much - although you may need to
  92. set up the following things if the intelligent configuration failed
  93. or you aborted it:

  95. Port Parameters:-
  96. To change these, press [Alt] and [P] from the Terminal window.
  97. After you have made your changes, hit "OK" for a temporary change for
  98. that session only, or "Update" to permanently write the changes in
  99. your configuration.

  101. If you have a faster modem than 2400 bps, you should set your bps rate
  102. to 19200 or 38400 or even faster (see below).
  103.  
  104. Fast modems can use data compression and if you only use 9600, you
  105. will not be making the best of the hardware you possess for fast
  106. transfers since your low port speed will act as a bottleneck.
  107.  
  108. Normally, for most BBS use, you use 8 databits, no parity, 1 stopbit.
  109.  
  110. If you do have a slow modem and are using 2400, you should disable
  111. Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol in the "Change Configuration,
  112. Communication Setup" menu.
  113.  
  114. 9600bps and faster modems use Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol, which is a
  115. safer way of sending data when using a comport at 19200 or above.
  116. (Don't ever run 57600 bps or faster on external modems, unless you are
  117. sure that your cable is protected from noise - try 38400 first.)
  118.  
  119. Remember you must also set RTS/CTS flowcontrol in your modem - look in
  120. the modem manual. RTS/CTS flowcontrol requires an internal modem OR an
  121. external modem AND a proper modem cable which has the RTS and CTS
  122. (Request to send/Clear to send) pins connected.
  123.  
  124. "Modem and dialling" configuration menu:-
  125. If you did not allow the program to install a modem from the pick
  126. list at first installation, you might choose "Install modem" from
  127. this menu now.
  128.  
  129. If your modem does not feature in the pick list of modems, you must set
  130. the following things manually - or at least check if they work (Look
  131. in your modem manual to check for further details. Remember factory
  132. defaults on your modem may mean you won't have to change anything...):

  134. Carrier Detect (CD) follows line (usually &C1)
  135.  
  136. Type AT&C1 and press enter
  137.  
  138. When DTR is low, line must be dropped, (Usually &D2 or &D3)
  139.  
  140. Type AT&D2 and press enter
  141.  
  142. Not all modems like this, if you can't hangup your modem, move to the
  143. "Modem & dialling" menu and Enter a 0 at the hang-up options which
  144. will allow Terminate to send a hangup string to your modem instead.
  145.  
  146. Type ATS0=0
  147. Then your modem will not pick up the phone - leaving Terminate to make
  148. the decision.
  149.  
  150. If you can save your setup in your modem, type AT&W, otherwise you
  151. must use the initstring which combines these various commands:
  152. AT&C1&D2S0=0^M
  153.  
  154. If your modem string is not sent because the carrier is high when you
  155. start up Terminate, you should enable the switch "Force init string"
  156. in the "Modem and dialling" menu..
  157.  
  158. If your modem is a normal Hayes compatible you don't need to set up
  159. anything else, everything has been set up already.

  163. Now you should be ready to press [Alt][D] for the phonebook and call
  164. some of the great BBS's listed there - or make some entries of your
  165. own...
