- To upgrade from versions 1.85 thru' 2.01:
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- 1) Make copies of these files from your old version in a holding
- directory structure separate, distinct and apart from the
- directory you will install the program in:
-
- term.cfg
- smartpad.txt
- term.log
- term.tet
- \HOST\users.dat
- users.sec
- \MAIL\areas.cfg
- \MAILER\mailer.log
- mailer.cfg
- mailer.evt
- request.lst
- \PHONES\*.fon
- *.kbd
- *.xlt
- *.cst where * is replaced with the name of any of the
- files with these extensions that you have changed
- \QWK\qwk.cfg
- qwk.tag
- qwk.nam
- \SAM'ED\areas.cfg
- origins.txt
- samed.cfg
- samed.lst
- \SCRIPT\*.rsl where * is replaced with the name of any of the
- example script files we supplied that you have
- customised.
-
- 2) Install the latest version in your old directory and answer A for
- Always to the question "Overwrite? (Yes/No/Always/Quit) [N]"
-
- 3) Copy your old files that you preserved in step (1) above back into
- the directory structure either over-writing the newly installed
- files or renaming as you think appropriate.
-
- To upgrade from versions older than 1.85
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Start over!
-
- You MUST start afresh with a new directory structure separate, distinct
- and apart from the directory structure you have your obsolete versions
- of Terminate already installed in.
-
- Sorry, but we have greatly improved the program adding, amongst
- other features, multi task-windows, greatly improved IEMSI capable
- MiniHost with QWK Mail Door, QWK'em Offline Mail Reader, Fax Manager,
- RIPscrip 1.54 graphics in both Terminal and QWK'em, REXX-like Script
- Language for DOS full scripting (RSL), Prestel/Viewdata, etc, etc so
- none of your old phonebook structures, configuration files, etc, etc,
- remain compatible.
-
- (This is just one of the reasons we changed the default installation
- directory and executable to "TERM")

-
- At the Operating System prompt, enter: INSTALL
-
- (Terminate is WARP aware and should automatically detect the OS/2
- environment if you have OS2COMSPEC set and act accordingly))
-
- {Please note that we can NOT help you with the English Language Test
- you must pass before installation continues. We want to be sure that
- people understand enough English to give their INFORMED consent to our
- licencing terms...}
- *
-
- After a successful installation, enter: T.BAT
- and the first time the program runs it will attempt an intelligent
- configuration.
-
- For people who don't know much about serial communication and modems:
- - don't worry about all the options!
-
- IMPORTANT: If you don't understand a toggle or option do not change it
- - just leave it as it is. The options have already been set
- to give the best performance for the majority.
-
- *
-
- All options have been set as sensible defaults for normal use, and
- there is no immediate need to change much - although you may need to
- set up the following things if the intelligent configuration failed
- or you aborted it:
-
- Port Parameters:-
- To change these, press [Alt] and [P] from the Terminal window.
- After you have made your changes, hit "OK" for a temporary change for
- that session only, or "Update" to permanently write the changes in
- your configuration.
-
- If you have a faster modem than 2400 bps, you should set your bps rate
- to 19200 or 38400 or even faster (see below).
-
- Fast modems can use data compression and if you only use 9600, you
- will not be making the best of the hardware you possess for fast
- transfers since your low port speed will act as a bottleneck.
-
- Normally, for most BBS use, you use 8 databits, no parity, 1 stopbit.
-
- If you do have a slow modem and are using 2400, you should disable
- Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol in the "Change Configuration,
- Communication Setup" menu.
-
- 9600bps and faster modems use Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol, which is a
- safer way of sending data when using a comport at 19200 or above.
- (Don't ever run 57600 bps or faster on external modems, unless you are
- sure that your cable is protected from noise - try 38400 first.)
-
- Remember you must also set RTS/CTS flowcontrol in your modem - look in
- the modem manual. RTS/CTS flowcontrol requires an internal modem OR an
- external modem AND a proper modem cable which has the RTS and CTS
- (Request to send/Clear to send) pins connected.
-
- "Modem and dialling" configuration menu:-
- If you did not allow the program to install a modem from the pick
- list at first installation, you might choose "Install modem" from
- this menu now.
-
- If your modem does not feature in the pick list of modems, you must set
- the following things manually - or at least check if they work (Look
- in your modem manual to check for further details. Remember factory
- defaults on your modem may mean you won't have to change anything...):
-
- Carrier Detect (CD) follows line (usually &C1)
-
- Type AT&C1 and press enter
-
- When DTR is low, line must be dropped, (Usually &D2 or &D3)
-
- Type AT&D2 and press enter
-
- Not all modems like this, if you can't hangup your modem, move to the
- "Modem & dialling" menu and Enter a 0 at the hang-up options which
- will allow Terminate to send a hangup string to your modem instead.
-
- Type ATS0=0
- Then your modem will not pick up the phone - leaving Terminate to make
- the decision.
-
- If you can save your setup in your modem, type AT&W, otherwise you
- must use the initstring which combines these various commands:
- AT&C1&D2S0=0^M
-
- If your modem string is not sent because the carrier is high when you
- start up Terminate, you should enable the switch "Force init string"
- in the "Modem and dialling" menu..
-
- If your modem is a normal Hayes compatible you don't need to set up
- anything else, everything has been set up already.
-
- *
-
- Now you should be ready to press [Alt][D] for the phonebook and call
- some of the great BBS's listed there - or make some entries of your
- own...
-
- Have fun!
-
