  5. MUSIC is a ShareWare product.  ShareWare means you get quality software for a
  6. really low price because you don't have to pay for a middle-man or fancy
  7. packaging.  The ShareWare concept is this:  you get the program for free (off
  8. of BBS's or copied from a friend or off the Internet, etc.).  You play with it
  9. and see if it does what you want.  If you choose to use it then you register
  10. it and pay the small registration fee and everyone wins.  If you choose not to
  11. use it then you simply don't register it.  Nothing lost.  It's a great concept
  12. but it relies on the honesty of you -- the user.  As long as I get
  13. registrations and suggestions I will continue to put work into improving MUSIC
  14. so you get a better program for next to nothing.  It's a two-way street.
  15.      You are free (even encouraged) to give copies of MUSIC to anyone you wish
  16. as long as you give them all the files in the full MUSIC package.  Companies
  17. that package and sell ShareWare disks or CD's are required to contact me
  18. first.

  53. for how you use MUSIC (see the Copyright Warning section of this manual).
  54.      Disks sent to you contain the latest version of MUSIC and the full manual
  55. in two formats:  PostScript and PCL (for standard HP(tm) LaserJets and 
  56. compatibles).  These manuals are fully formatted and just need to be sent 
  57. to a PostScript or PCL printer.  
  58.      Once registered you can get additional upgrades sent to you on disk for 
  59. only $5  ($10 outside the U.S.A.).  If you have Internet FTP access you can 
  60. most likely download the latest version of MUSIC from bach.nevada.edu (login 
  61. as anonymous; your email address is the password).  You can also find it at
  62. the MUSIC home page via WWW (World Wide Web) at...

  65. For those of you interested in getting the C source code:
  66.      I just converted the program from Pascal to C so I had the thrilling
  67. opportunity to walk through each line of source code in detail and make
  68. changes.  The initial Pascal version of MUSIC was in-the-works for about 8
  69. years so as my styles changed the source code did as well.  Having gone
  70. through the hassle of converting it to C I took the time to make the source
  71. code extremely clean and well documented since I planned on making the source
  72. code available to registered users.  MUSIC is pretty powerful as it is but
  73. there is a lot of different uses for it which could make good use of many
  74. features it currently doesn't support and it may be the case that it would not
  75. be in my best interest to make such features available in the general-public
  76. program.  As such you have the opportunity to make the changes yourself by
  77. getting the C source code.  MUSIC is currently compiled by Borland Turbo C++
  78. v3.1 but does not make use of any C++ constructs (it is straight C).  As part
  79. of the MUSIC program you get CAP_LIB.C which is a collection of useful library
  80. routines I wrote that MUSIC uses extensively.
  81.      As far as personal help from me... you can reach me through Email and if
  82. it is not too much work, I will answer your questions for free.  I want MUSIC
  83. to work for you the best it can and I would be interested in seeing what new
  84. features you programmers will be adding to it so I will help you as much as
  85. time permits.
  86.      Currently the source code is just over 640k in .C and .H files but it is
  87. easy to follow and doesn't play funny C-style tricks you see many programmers
  88. doing.  I like to keep it simple.  MUSIC doesn't need any fancy high-speed
  89. gadgetry to do what it does fast because of the simple nature of what it does.
  90. I don't have a separate tech document describing the guts of the source code
  91. but if I get enough requests for one I would most likely put one together and
  92. make it available to you.
  93.      Along with the source code I will throw in some utility programs I've
  94. written up that help me.
  95.      If you are a seasoned programmer and have some interest in porting MUSIC
  96. to another operating system, I would love to talk with you.  I have gotten
  97. several requests for Mac, OS/2 and UNIX versions but am not interested in
  98. doing the port myself.

  101. I was between 6 and 9 months pregnant with our second child and chasing after
  102. our then 11-month-old BY MYSELF as my husband spent countless hours perfecting
  103. MUSIC.  All the while I was carrying on conversations with a little boy whose
  104. vocabulary consisted of "All gone", with a heating pad strapped to my
  105. overtaxed lower back, I told myself it would be worth it because SURELY
  106. everyone who received MUSIC would recognize what an incredible bargain they
  107. were getting for a measly 15 bucks.  Certainly they wouldn't deny a man (and
  108. his self-sacrificing wife) a piddly $15 after he spent hundreds, if not
  109. thousands of hours creating such a quality product.  Heck, they might even
  110. include, say, an extra five bucks just so the wife could buy something nice
  111. for herself.
