  4. Saw two different things of interest today : 1 from congress, one I got from a
  5. few different papers.

  7. 1) Proposed legislation before the Senate:

  9. 7S.314 - 0 Under S.314 anyone who "makes, transmits, or otherwise makes available
  10. any comment, request, suggestion, proposal, image, or other communication"
  11. which is "obscene, lewd, laviscious, filthy, or indecent" using a
  12. "telecommunications device" would be subject to a fine of up to $100,000.00 or
  13. two years in prison (Section (2)(a)).
  14.      Basically, the scope of the bill would make all telecommunications
  15. carriers (including telephone companies, commercial online services, the
  16. Internet, and BBSes) liable for every message,file, or other content carried on
  17. its network. (Including the private conversations or messages between
  18. consenting individuals)

  24. Second item of interest : Student arrested for posting a fictional story on the
  25. Internet
  26.  
  27. Jeff Baker was arrested after posting a fictional story on the Internet. The
  28. story contained rape, torture and snuff killings and the actual name of a
  29. female classmate. Jeff had never communicated to her about his writings or
  30. fantasies in any way, he was arrested when another classmate contacted police
  31. in regards to the story. He is being held under the states 'stalking' laws, and
  32. the key piece of evidence against him are the post and 1 person who has said
  33. that Jeff said "Fantasies just aren't enough anymore."
  34. Sources close to the case have indicated that the State has no other evidence
  35. and has had no previous complaints filed against Jeff. But the State feels that
  36. the post as well as that 1 brief statement warrant the arrest and prosecution.

  47. ferret shelters who adopt out ferrets who have been lost/found, abused
