  5. USING NOTEPAD TO VIEW ON-LINE DOCUMENTS
  6. =======================================

  8.   *  If you enlarge Notepad to its maximum size, this document
  9.      will be easier to read. Just type Alt-space followed by X.
  10.      
  11.   *  To exit Notepad and return to Windows, double-click the
  12.      Control-menu or choose Exit from the File menu.

  24. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  25. =========================
  26.  
  27. To install MicroPhone II, its documents and drivers, follow these
  28. steps. (If you already own MicroPhone II, back up your settings
  29. documents before installation.) Full installation requires two
  30. megabytes of disk space.
  31.  
  32. * Start Windows.
  33.  
  34. * Insert the MicroPhone II program disk into your floppy drive.
  35.  
  36. * From the Windows Program Manager (Windows 3.0) or File Manager,
  37.   choose Run from the File menu (Alt-F-R).
  38.  
  39. * Enter the name of the floppy drive you are using, then enter install
  40.   (e.g., a:install) and choose OK.
  41.  
  42. * When the Installer asks, enter your name and the name of your
  43.   organization. Then choose OK.
  44.  
  45. * In the next dialog box, type the path and name for your
  46.   MicroPhone II directory (c:\mp2\ is the default) and choose Continue.
  47.  
  48. * Choose the "Install all documents" option to install all MicroPhone II
  49.   documents. (Choose "Install selected documents" to select specific
  50.   documents to install.) Choose the Continue button to install the
  51.   documents.
  52.  
  53. NOTE: If MicroPhone II was installed previously, the Installer will
  54. also ask what to do with existing MicroPhone II files. You can choose
  55. to rename existing files, overwrite them, or have the Installer ask
  56. for confirmation before overwriting each file. You can also exit the
  57. program to back up your files and re-start the installation.

  60. BACKING-UP YOUR MICROPHONE II DISKS
  61. ===================================
  62.  
  63. Make copies of your MicroPhone II disks and put the original disks in
  64. a safe place.
  65.  
  66. Use DISKCOPY in DOS to make complete copies. Do not use the File
  67. Manager or DOS "XCOPY *.* /s" to make the copies; neither of these
  68. copies all the required information.
  69.  
  70. Back-up disks that are not an exact duplicate of the original disks
  71. cause a conflict with the DOS program SHARE.EXE. If you have problems
  72. installing from your back-up disks, try the installation using the
  73. original disks or remove SHARE.EXE from your CONFIG.SYS file and
  74. restart your computer.

  77. INSTALLING A SECOND TIME
  78. ========================
  79.  
  80. MicroPhone II's installer provides the option to install only selected
  81. files. To install files not installed the first time, or install the
  82. original files again, follow the same instructions used for your
  83. initial installation.
  84.  
  85. When the installer asks which documents to install, choose "Install
  86. Selected Documents."
  87.  
  88. In the resulting dialog box, select the documents you want to install
  89. and choose Continue. The installer will add the selected documents,
  90. and update the "*.ini" and group files as described under Network
  91. Installation below.
  92.  
  93. If you are installing over existing documents, you may end up with
  94. duplicate icons in the Program Manager's MicroPhone II group. If
  95. this happens, select each of the duplicate items and choose Delete
  96. from the File menu in the Program Manager. (If you were installing
  97. into a different directory, you will still get duplicate icons, but
  98. with the new path information. You should delete the old icons,
  99. checking the path, or change the icons so you can distinguish between
  100. the old and new.)

  102. IMPORTANT: Do not run the installer while MicroPhone II is running.
  103. Problems can occur because the installer may update a file in use by
  104. MicroPhone II.
  105.  
  106.  
  107. NETWORK INSTALLATIONS
  108. =====================
  109.  
  110. Unless you have a network license agreement, Software Ventures
  111. Corporation requires each user to purchase MicroPhone II. As long as
  112. one package is owned by each user, users can share the application
  113. and documents on a network file server. Contact Software Ventures
  114. Corporation's sales department at (510) 644-3232 for information about
  115. network licensing.
  116.  
  117. Although MicroPhone II's installer is designed to install only to a
  118. local hard disk, the installer should work with most PC networks
  119. because they are designed to look like local hard disks.
  120.  
  121. Be sure that you have permission to write to the directory where
  122. MicroPhone II is being installed. If you install into a directory that
  123. does not exist, the installer will try to create the directory. Make
  124. sure you have permission to create the directory.
  125.  
  126. MicroPhone II's installer will:
  127.  
  128. 1. Create the application's directory if it does not already exist.
  129.  
  130. 2. Copy MicroPhone II-specific files to the application's directory.
  131.  
  132. 3. Make these changes in the Windows directory: 
  133.   - Add the *.mdc association to win.ini 
  134.   - Change the boot section of system.ini from "comm.drv=comm.drv" to 
  135.     "comm.drv=comm_svc.drv" (This is only for use of MicroPhone II's
  136.     comm driver with support for faster baud rates.)
  137.   - Copy MicPhone.ini and MPTran.ini into the Windows directory.
  138.  
  139. 4. Copy these files to the Windows\System directory: 
  140.    micvt102.dll, comm_svc.drv, mppcansi.fon & mpdecvt.fon.
  141.  
  142. 5. Update MicPhone.ini for installed documents and other information.
  143.  
  144. 6. Build MicroPhone II's Program Manager group.
  145.  
  146. 7. Launch Notepad with the ReadMe.txt.
  147.  
  148. If MicroPhone II's installer is not able to install on your network,
  149. you can install the files manually by following the same steps. 
  150.  
  151. MicroPhone II's support files (micvt102.dll, comm_svc.drv,
  152. mppcansi.fon & mpdecvt.fon) can be placed anywhere on the DOS path.
  153. (MicroPhone II's application directory is not normally on the path.)
  154. If comm_svc.drv is not in the Windows System directory, Windows'
  155. system.ini must specify the path to it.
  156.  
  157. MicroPhone II's profile file, MicPhone.ini, must be located in the
  158. same directory as each user's win.ini. Each user must have write
  159. permission to this file in order to use MicroPhone II. MPTran.ini must
  160. be in this directory to use MicroPhone II's international
  161. character translation tables.
  162.  
  163. All other MicroPhone II files, including the application, may be
  164. located anywhere. Each user's win.ini must contain an association
  165. entry specifying the path to the application (MP2.exe). MP2.exe will
  166. automatically update MicPhone.ini when it is executed. MicroPhone II
  167. files can be located in read only directories, but users must have
  168. write permission to documents they are going to change.
  169.  
  170. MicroPhone II's document names are not restricted like DOS file names.
  171. These document names are listed in MicPhone.ini under the Settings
  172. heading. If a document name is properly listed in MicPhone.ini, you
  173. can use "MP2.exe" followed by the document name in the command line of
  174. the Program Manager's Properties dialog box. If it is not, you must
  175. use a full path name.

  178. INSTALLING UNDER NORTON DESKTOP
  179. ===============================
  180.  
  181. There have been reports of Windows problems when running MicroPhone
  182. II's installer under the Norton Desktop utility. Run Microsoft's
  183. Program Manager to install MicroPhone II. If the Program Manager is
  184. not available, open Norton Desktop's Preferences and turn off the Task
  185. List and Launch List, restart Windows, and then run MicroPhone II's
  186. installer.
