  4. Shorthand Version 5.x is a 16-bit Windows application with
  5. a 16 to 32 bit translation interface that enables Shorthand
  6. to work with both 16-bit and 32-bit Windows applications.
  7.  
  8. Shorthand now supports automatic replacement of keywords
  9. while you type without the need for the leading hot key.
  10. You can still use the hot key if you wish.

  17. INTRODUCTION
  18. ------------
  19. Shorthand is a typing productivity tool designed to work concurrently
  20. with most Microsoft Windows (both 16 and 32 bit) applications.  
  21. Just as a stenographer uses shorthand notation to represent words and 
  22. phrases, Shorthand allows you to represent a string of text with a 
  23. much shorter abbreviation or keyword.  Instead of typing the text string, 
  24. you type the shorter keyword and Shorthand takes care of typing 
  25. the text string into your application.  For example, you can
  26. represent the phrase "as soon as possible" with the keyword "asap."
  27. The next time you need to type the phrase "as soon as possible" into
  28. your favorite Windows word processor, you simply type "asap", press 
  29. the Space bar, and Shorthand inserts "as soon as possible" right into 
  30. your Windows word processor.  Shorthand works with most Windows word 
  31. processors, text editors and even text fields in most Windows dialog 
  32. boxes.  A good illustration of the flexibility of Shorthand is the 
  33. common (and tedious) procedure of entering your credit card number 
  34. when filling out a Web order form.  With Shorthand, you first 
  35. enter the credit card number and a unique keyword into Shorthand's 
  36. dictionary.  The next time you need to type the credit card number, 
  37. just type the keyword and Shorthand will type the credit card number
  38. for you!

  40. DISTRIBUTION LICENSE
  41. --------------------
  42. Shorthand is a shareware program that can be freely
  43. uploaded to any public bulletin board such as Compuserve, 
  44. America On-Line, etc.  Shareware distributors may distribute 
  45. this program for a small fee to cover their distribution costs.
  46. The only thing you can't distribute are the passwords and
  47. user license files that unlock Shorthand.

  49. INSTALLATION
  50. ------------
  51. Copy the files to a directory on your hard disk. 
  52. Run the SETUP.EXE program to install Shorthand.
  53. Complete documentation is available on-line in the
  54. Shorthand Help and *.WRI files. If you have trouble
  55. running SETUP.EXE, please read the README.TXT file
  56. for manual installation.

  58. RUNNING SHORTHAND
  59. -----------------
  60. Double-click the Shorthand icon to start Shorthand.
  61. The executable filename is SHORTHND.EXE.
  62.  
  63. QUICK TEST
  64. ----------
  65. If you are using Shorthand for the first time, Shorthand opens the DEMO1.SPF
  66. dictionary which contains some sample words.  
  67. For a quick test of Shorthand, do the following:
  68. 1. Start Shorthand; Shorthand's About Box appears with the 
  69.    number of days remaining in your evaluation period.
  70. 2. Click OK. Shorthand's main window appears; 
  71.    DEMO1.SPF should be active dictionary.
  72. 3. Click the HIDE button to hide Shorthand.
  73. 4. Start NOTEPAD or any other word processor.

  75. To demonstrate the AUTOREPLACE feature:
  76. 1. Type "asap" followed by a SPACE. 
  77.    Shorthand should insert the phrase "as soon as possible" into your 
  78.    word processor.

  80. To demonstrate Shorthand's hot key feature:
  81. 1. From your word processor, press the F10 key. Shorthand should pop up.
  82. 2. Use your mouse to select the "ASAP" keyword in Shorthand's dictionary
  83.    list.  The text "as soon as possible" should appear in the TEXT TO TYPE
  84.    box.
  85. 3. Click the TYPE IT button to insert the contents of the TEXT TO TYPE box
  86.    into your word processor.

  91. REGISTRATION
  92. ------------
  93. Shorthand is protected by a software time-lock.  When you first
  94. install Shorthand, you are given 30 days to evaluate the product.
  95. If you find Shorthand useful you are expected to register. 
  96. There are two types of licenses: a User License for individual users 
  97. and a Site License for company-wide use.  
  98. Registration instructions and a price list are available
  99. by choosing "Licensing and Registration" from Shorthand's Help menu.

  103. WHAT YOU GET
  104. ------------
  105. After OfficeSoft receives your registration fee, OfficeSoft
  106. will send you a License File which disables the time lock 
  107. and allows Shorthand to work beyond the 30-day trial period. 
  108. The License File is not copy protected.
  109. If you include your e-mail address, OfficeSoft
  110. can send you the License File much sooner. 
  111. OfficeSoft will normally send the License File to you within
  112. a few working days but please allow 4 to 6 weeks to receive
  113. your License File. If the Shorthand program has expired and
  114. the License File has not yet arrived, registered users 
  115. have permission to use a temporary extension password 
  116. until they receive the License File.  You can
