- WARLORDS ][ NOTES (v1.00s)
- ---------------------------
-
-
-
- MEMORY REQUIREMENTS
- -------------------
-
- Warlords ][ runs quite comfortably on most machines with 580 Kb
- of free memory.
- If you are using a sound blaster card, with digitized sounds and
- music installed, you may require a little more memory (590 Kb)
- Naturally though, the more memory the better. Warlords ][ will
- run faster on machines with over 600 Kb of free memory.
-
-
- SWITCHES
- --------
-
- The following switches are available when you play Warlords ][
- To use them, type them after the name "WAR2",
- e.g. type "WAR2 S M" to use the alternate-army version on a
- monochrome screen
-
- 'x' Use extended memory
- 'h' Do not use expanded or extended memory
- 's' Use alternate army names
- 'm' Mono version, for laptop use
- 'v' No talking advisor
- 'n' No startup animation
-
- Note that it is not necessary to use any of these switches if you
- do not want to! These are for unusual options! Warlords ][ will
- run quite normally if you simply type "WAR2"
-
-
- RAZED CITIES ARE STILL PORTS
- ----------------------------
-
- Even though you can't own them and build troops in them,
- razed cities still act as ports.
-
-
- HISTORY HAS 200 TURN LIMIT
- --------------------------
-
- Due to memory considerations, the history graphs now show only
- up to turn 200 (not 300 as the manual states). For most games,
- this should be more than adequate.
-
-
- STOPPING THE COMPUTER MOVING
- ----------------------------
-
- If there are no human players left in the game, or if you are
- simply observing a game of Warlords ][, you may eventually wish
- to stop the computer players from moving and inspect the game.
-
- To do this, hold down a SHIFT or ALT key. When the current
- computer player has finished his turn, you will be prompted to
- "Press ESC to stop the game". If you hit ESC now, the game will
- stop and all the players will become human. If you don't hit
- ESC, the game will continue;

- TROUBLE-SHOOTING
- ----------------
-
- 1. The Game Will Not Run
-
- Make sure you have 580 Kb of free memory. Check this
- with the MEM command. Type MEM at the DOS prompt and you will
- be told "Largest Executable Program Size: XXX K". If "XXX" is
- less than 580, you will need to free up some memory (refer to
- your DOS manual).
-
- Make sure you have installed the sound for the correct
- Sound Card. For example, if you have an Adlib card and you
- select PAS sound, the game will not run.
- Type INSTALL to re-install your sound,
-
-
- 2. I Don't Get Any Sound!
-
- Make sure you have installed the sound for the correct
- Sound Card. For example, if you have an Adlib card and you
- select PAS sound, the game will not run.
- Type INSTALL to re-install your sound,
-
- If you have a Sound Blaster, make sure you have set
- the correct MEMORY/IRQ/DMA settings. The install program should
- automatically detect these values - if in doubt, use this programs's
- suggestions.
-
-
- 3. The Music On My Sound Blaster Pro Sounds Strange!
-
- You may have installed the wrong Sound Blaster Pro drivers.
- Many cards just use the "Sound Blaster Pro II (OPL)" driver,
- but a card will often use the "Sound Blaster Pro I (Yamaha)"
- driver instead. Try both - you'll know which one is right!
-
-
- 4. The Game Runs Too Slowly
-
- There are a number of ways to speed up Warlords ][.
- The first and best way is too use a disk-caching program
- (like SMARTDRV - for instructions see your DOS manual).
-
- Another solution is to free up more memory. The
- game will run faster on machines with 600 Kb free, and faster
- still on machines with 610 Kb free! To free up more memory,
- load TSRs and DRIVERS into high memory (see LOADHIGH and
- DEVICEHIGH in your DOS manual) Alternately you can run the
- MEMMAKER program supplied with MS-DOS 6.0. As a last resort,
- you might want to create a bootable floppy disk to set up
- a clean system for you to play.
-
- One more good solution is to allocate more EXPANDED
- memory. EXPANDED memory is faster than EXTENDED memory, and
- you will notice a speed increase of up to 200% if you do this!
- Refer to your MS-DOS manual to see how to make more expanded
- memory available (you will need to add a line like this to
- your CONFIG.SYS file:
- "DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 2048"
- which allocates 2Mb of EXPANDED memory).
-
-
- 5. I've Changed My Sound Card, What Now?
-
- Run the program INSTALL.EXE (from the WARLORD2 directory,
- type "INSTALL"). You will now be prompted for your new sound
- settings
-
-
-
- OTHER PEOPLES' SAVED MAPS AND GAMES
- -----------------------------------
-
- 1. The problems...
-
- You may, at some stage, wish to take a saved map or game
- from a friend and load it into your copy of Warlords ][. By
- itself, this is a problem! Warlords ][ keeps track of the games
- it has saved on YOUR PC - you cannot just add another game by
- copying a file.
- For this exact purpose, we have provided an IMPORT
- facility to let you access maps and games which were created on
- other peoples' machines.
-
- 2. What to do
-
- Copy the map/game to your Warlords ][ directory. Let us
- suppose it is a game and you have called it "newgame.sav". All
- you have to do now is type something like this:
-
- IMPORT GAME newgame.sav NewGame 1
-
- This will import the saved game into Warlords ][. It will appear in
- slot #1 of your saved game list (overwriting whatever was already
- there) and will have the name "NewGame".
-
- WARNING!!! Whatever slot you import the map/game into is
- COMPLETELY OVERWRITTEN! Take care you do not lose
- a previously saved map/game that you wish to keep!
-
- 3. The IMPORT command in more depth
-
- The general form of the IMPORT command (used for importing
- saved maps and games) is this:
-
- IMPORT <MAP|GAME> <filename> <listname> <slot>
-
- <MAP|GAME> Specifies whether it is a map or a game you are
- importing
- <filename> Is the name of the file containing the map/game
- <listname> Is the name that will appear in the saved
- map/game list, when you are playing Warlords ][.
- It may contain no spaces, and cannot be longer than
- 14 letters.
- <slot> Is a number from 1 to 10. It specifies which
- position on the list will receive this map/game.
