  1.               What's New With the ZipNews Door for Waffle

  5.   A change in the mailer/reader code (to Reader v0.91c) necessitates this
  6.   release.  This version can now user Waffle's RMAIL more effectively to
  7.   generate more complete mail headers (and the reader has been updated to
  8.   include these header lines).  Door versions prior to this one will not
  9.   produce correct headers if run with readers of vintage v0.91c or later.

  11.   Trying to get this release of the door out and around before the next
  12.   version of the reader hits.  This version is backward compatible to
  13.   earlier readers, but unfortunatlely older versions of the door are not
  14.   forward compatible to the newer reader. (Clear as mud?)

  18.   This is a MAJOR UPDATE.  Do NOT load this package in place of a prior
  19.   version without reading these update notes and making the changes
  20.   indicated.  You'll get some very strange results if you ignore this
  21.   advice.

  23.   - Before you do anything else, if you have previously installed the
  24.     ZipNews door on your system, delete the present ZN.COM on your system.
  25.     Significant new functionality has forced us out of the 'C' tiny model
  26.     and into the small model resulting in ZN.EXE as the executable rather
  27.     than a .COM.  Delete the ZN.COM file now so that you don't execute
  28.     that in error later.

  30.   - The ZN.CFG file has also undergone significant changes.  If you
  31.     previously had installed the ZipNews door, save your old ZN.CFG under
  32.     a different name so that you can reference it while you do
  33.     re-customization for your system using the ZN.CFG in this release as
  34.     the starting point.

  37.    with the good stuff . . . ]

  39.   - The major enhancement to this version is the new ability to
  40.     communicate with the door's companion program, the ZipNews Reader
  41.     (and Mailer in that program's registered from).  The ZipNews Door
  42.     offers the caller a choice of download formats: the original ASCII
  43.     text file format and the new ZipNews Reader format.  The ZipNews
  44.     Reader, by the way, will be available soon.  It is in a limited
  45.     BETA testing cycle as of this writing.

  47.   - The ZipNews door now operates both ways!  It can accept uploads of
  48.     news articles composed on the registered form of the ZipNews
  49.     Reader/Mailer.  It posts them appropriately under control of Waffle's
  50.     RNEWS program.  The door continues to offer full NEWS-related
  51.     functionality in its unregistered form.
  52.  
  53.   - Also new with the registered form of the door for this release is the
  54.     ability to access and transfer to the caller his/her personal mail as
  55.     received on the Waffle system.  The mail operations also include
  56.     acceptance of uploaded mail composed on the registered form of the
  57.     ZipNews Reader/Mailer.  The uploaded mail is processed under control
  58.     of Waffle's RMAIL program.  Mail operations are NOT supported by the
  59.     unregistered form of the ZipNews Door.

  61.   - The significant changes to the ZN.CFG file mentioned earlier involve
  62.     the two-way nature of the door now.  Additional lines had to be added
  63.     to accommodate command specifications for the uncompressing of files
  64.     (the uploaded packets) and for specifying the "receive" protocol
  65.     command line.  There is also a new "organization :" line and a
  66.     "hostname :" line.  See the ZN.CFG included within this archive.

  68.   - Several significant bugs have been fixed in the news scanning
  69.     operation.  One had been bothering us for many months, and would
  70.     occasionally result in preparing for download fewer new articles
  71.     from a newsgroup then what were really available.  We're very happy
  72.     to have nailed that elusive one.
  73.  
  74.   - There were occasions with prior releases where the caller's JOIN
  75.     file would be inappropriately changed.  Two bugs in this area have
  76.     been squashed, and JOIN file updating appears to solid and reliable
  77.     with this release.

  79. One parting comment for first-time ZipNews Door users -- the file
  80. ZIPNEWS.DOC included with this archive is sadly out of date.  I have
  81. not taken the time to update it in order to expedite the releases of
  82. these BETA versions.  Please key off this text file and ZN.CFG for
  83. the down and dirty installation details.  The original .DOC is still good
  84. for the general overview.

  89. -  Fixed bug which resulted in resetting the last article read
  90.    pointers of LOCAL newsgroups in the caller's JOIN file.

  92. -  Fixed bug whereby errors occurred with some callers when reading
  93.    PCBOARD.SYS (for those PCBoard systems offering ZipNews optionally
  94.    from the main PCBoard prompt).   The affected callers were unable
  95.    enter ZipNews directly from the PCBoard main prompt, although they
  96.    still could gain access via Waffle (running as a door under PCBoard).

  98. -  Added capability for downloading ALL local forums and newsgroups.  To
  99.    include local forums, merely include the head directory along with your
  100.    news directory spec in ZN.CFG.  Example:

  106. -  Other changes in preparation for support of the ZipNews Reader/Mailer

  112.  - Introduced initial operation capability with PCBoard BBS software.
  113.    ZipNews can now be executed as a door directly from PCBoard (but must
  114.    have Waffle installed on same system).  For further details, see the
  115.    file PCBOARD.OPS
  116.  
  117.  - Some early BETA testers are experiencing confusing error reports when
  118.    either an incorrect Waffle Account spec is given on the command line
  119.    for invoking the door OR the directory name (corresponding) to a
  120.    Waffle Account cannot be found off the directory specified as the
  121.    "user" parm in ZN.CFG.  To make the error report hopefully more
  122.    meaningful, it now says:
  123.    "Cannot open user's personal config file.
  124.    Possibly invalid Waffle account specified?"
