  19. The following is a list of currently active USENET newsgroups as of
  20. 19 June 1989.  The groups distributed worldwide are divided 
  21. into seven broad classifications:  "news", "soc", "talk", "misc",
  22. "sci", "comp" and "rec".  Each of these classifications is organized
  23. into groups and subgroups according to topic.
  24.  
  25. "comp"  Topics of interest to both computer professionals and
  26.     hobbyists, including topics in computer science, software
  27.     source, and information on hardware and software systems.
  28.  
  29. "sci"   Discussions intended as technical in nature and relating
  30.     to the established sciences.
  31.  
  32. "misc"  Groups addressing themes not easily classified under any of the
  33.     other headings or which incorporate themes from multiple
  34.     categories.
  35.  
  36. "soc"    Groups primarily addressing social issues and socializing.
  37.  
  38. "talk"    Groups largely debate-oriented and tending to feature long
  39.     discussions without resolution and without appreciable amounts
  40.     of generally useful information.
  41.  
  42. "news"    Groups concerned with the news network and software themselves.
  43.  
  44. "rec"    Groups oriented towards hobbies and recreational activities.
  45.  
  46. These "world" newsgroups are (usually) circulated around the entire
  47. USENET -- this implies world-wide distribution.  Not all groups
  48. actually enjoy such wide distribution, however.  The European Usenet
  49. and Eunet sites take only a selected subset of the more "technical"
  50. groups, and controversial "noise" groups are often not carried by many
  51. sites in the US and Canada (these groups are primarily under the "talk"
  52. and "soc" classifications).  Many sites do not carry some or all of
  53. the comp.binaries groups.
  54.  
  55. There are groups in other subcategories, but they are local: to
  56. institutions, to geographic regions, etc. and they are not listed
  57. here.  Note that these distribution categories can be used to restrict
  58. the propagation of news articles.  Currently, distributions include:
  59.     world        worldwide distribution (default)
  60.     att        limited to AT&T
  61.     can        limited to Canada
  62.     eunet        limited to European sites
  63.     na        limited to North America
  64.     usa        limited to the United States
  65. There may be other regional and local distribution categories available
  66. at your site.  Most US states have distribution categories named after
  67. the two letter abbreviation for that state or category (e.g., "ga" for
  68. Georgia, "nj" for New Jersey). Please use an appropriate distribution
  69. category if your article is not likely to be of interest to USENET
  70. readers worldwide.
  71.  
  72. Some groups are moderated or are monitored mailing lists.  They can
  73. only be posted to by mailing submissions to the coordinator (provided
  74. in a companion posting).  Some selected sites provide automatic
  75. remailing in support of 2.11 news -- posting to one of these groups
  76. automatically mails the article for the poster. Some of the moderated
  77. groups are gatewayed to USENET from the ARPA Internet and appear as
  78. newsgroups to facilitate distribution and posting from the Usenet.
  79. Other of the "world" groups are bidirectionally gatewayed with ARPA
  80. Internet mailing lists; items submitted from the ARPA side to the
  81. digest are split up and submitted to the USENET group, while articles
  82. submitted on the USENET side are bundled up and submitted to the
  83. mailing list.  A complete list of moderated newsgroups, submission
  84. addresses and moderators is given in a companion posting.

  86. The following "world" groups have been gatewayed with the listed
  87. Arpa Internet lists.  Some of them may not still be gatewayed due to
  88. broken software and/or gateways; such groups are marked with an
  89. asterisk ("*") in the list below.  Please contact me if you should know
  90. of their current status.  Also note that the group "comp.lang.forth" is
  91. gatewayed with the Bitnet discussion list "umforth@weizmann.bitnet", and
  92. rec.railroad is run from "railroad@queens.bitnet".
  93. Some of these lists are gated one-way into Usenet groups; those groups
  94. have been marked with a ">" symbol in the list below.

  96. If you are reading this article from a site not on the Usenet, you may
  97. subscribe to Arpa Internet lists by writing to the request address.
  98. You form such an address by putting "-request" before the "@" symbol,
  99. as in "unix-emacs-request@bbn.com".  This gets your message directly to
  100. the list maintainer instead of broadcasting it to all the readers of
  101. the list.

  103. Also note that moderators of Usenet groups may not be in charge of the
  104. corresponding mailing list or gateway.  For example, the moderator of
  105. comp.sources.unix does not have anything to do with the unix-sources
  106. mailing list; matters concerning the mailing list should be addressed
  107. to unix-sources-request@brl.arpa
