  18. "news.announce.important" is a newsgroup for just what it says it is --
  19. important announcements.  It is intended to be read by everyone on
  20. Usenet, although nobody is forced to subscribe.  To post to
  21. news.announce.important, send mail to the moderator at
  22. "announce@stargate.com".  Some netnews implementations will
  23. automatically mail to the moderator anything posted instead of
  24. attempting to post it directly.  If the message is appropriate, it will
  25. be posted by the moderator; if not, the moderator will suggest a more
  26. appropriate place to post it or a better way to go about the same
  27. goal.

  29. Discussions in news.announce.important are explicitly forbidden, and
  30. the volume of traffic will be kept low enough to keep people from
  31. feeling a need to unsubscribe.  Usenet administrators for each site
  32. should make a point of reading news.announce.important.

  34. Some messages will be repeated every month, in order to reach all
  35. newcomers.  These messages will be placed in news.announce.newusers,
  36. which is also moderated.  This makes it safe for experienced users who
  37. have already read these messages to unsubscribe to
  38. news.announce.newusers without missing anything new in
  39. news.announce.important.  If you aren't familiar with the netnews
  40. guidelines in news.announce.newusers, please read them carefully.  Your
  41. understanding of these rules will assure that you don't annoy the more
  42. than 1 million members of the net community (estimated) by
  43. unintentionally abusing the net, and will help you get more value from
  44. the net.

  46. The current policy is that news.announce.important submissions must be:
  47.  
  48. (a) short - preferably they should fit on one crt screen, including headers.
  49. (b) important enough to at least have their header shown to everyone on the
  50.     net.  The posting should be more of benefit to the net than to the poster.
  51. (c) not posted to any other newsgroup - news.announce.important by itself is 
  52.     supposed to be sufficient to reach everybody, and nobody should have to
  53.     read an announcement more than once.
  54. (d) signed - the author should be clearly evident.
  55. (e) not commercial, political, or religious in nature.
