- MFJ-40A/40B/40C
- UPDATE KIT FOR TNC 2 VERSION 2, RELEASE 1.1.5
-
- This kit contains one 27C256 EPROM with Release 1.1.5 software
- and one instruction sheet. MFJ-40A contains software
- release 1.1.5-16K for 16K RAM operation. MFJ-40B contains
- software release 1.1.5-32K EPROM and a 32K RAM. MFJ-40C contains
- software release 1.1.5-32K EPROM without 32K RAM.
-
- The 1.1.5-16K and 1.1.5-32K software releases contain all
- FIXES, CHANGES AND ADDITIONS of the 1.1.4 and 1.1.3 releases.
-
-
- SOFTWARE RELEASE NOTES FOR RELEASE 1.1.5
-
- This document describes the difference between the latest
- release 1.1.5 and the previous (1.1.4) release of TAPR
- software for the TNC 2.
-
- The new object image occupies almost 0X45FF bytes of EPROM.
-
- NEW COMMAND
-
- BBSMSGS ON:OFF Default: OFF
-
- This command controls how the TNC displays certain messages
- in command and CONVERSE modes. The messages affected are
- described below:
-
- MESSAGE EFFECT WHEN BBSMSGS ON
-
- ***CONNECTED to xxxx -A newline is added just before"***"
-
- ***DISCONNECTED - " "
-
- ***retry limit exceeded- " "
-
- ***xxxx Busy - " "
-
- ***FRMR sent - " "
-
- ***FRMR rcvd - " "
-
- ***Connect request:xxxx-This message is omitted.
-
- The BBSMSGS command is primarily useful for host operation.
- Primarily with WORLI and like bulletin board systems that
- require link status messages to begin in the first output
- column.
-
- The connect request message is omitted during BBSMSGS mode.
- This should be most useful for preventing corruption of
- messages when forwarding with small frames.
-
-
- TXTMO : Counter Default: 0
-
-
- TXTMO is a new addition to the TNC health-group. This
- register may accumulate counts as the TNC succesfully reco-
- vers from HDLC transmitter timeouts. This is not a useful
- command for the majority of the users.
-
-
- FIXES
-
- o - Release 1.1.4 suffered from a spurious condition where
- the HDLC transmitter would time out. When this
- happened. TXQOVFLW would typically show a non-zero
- count. Release 1.1.5 incorporates an HDLC transmitter
- timeout feature to capture and recover from the
- timeout error.
-
- o - DWAIT operation has been fixed.
-
-
- *==========================================================================*
- | Above fix corrects the DIGI HANG problem experienced in DIGI mode. When |
- | used as an unattended DIGI - A BUG in 1.1.4 caused TNC not to respond. |
- | The only way to recover was to reset TNC. This has been fixed in 1.1.5. |
- | Version 1.1.5 will work in any 100% compatible TNC 2 unit. |

-
- To any packet radio bbs syops:
-
- I am having difficulty setting up forwarding for PRMBS v 0.98 rev V. PRMBS is
- new to me, but I have been using WA7MBL's code for some time now. I hope that
- there is somebody who reads this that can tell me where I am going wrong. All
- I want to do, is to forward to one other bbs (our hf gateway). All suggestions
- are appreciated. I have read the docs many, many times, but evidently I am
- doing something wrong. I want to forward stuff to a bbs @VE5DA which signs
- as VE5DA-2. Here is my event.mb file:

- Subject: KISS problems with MFJ1270?
-
- I have seen some rumblings concerning a possible incompatibility
- problem when trying to use an MFJ-1270B with the KISS chip. Whats the
- story on this ? I have been using an old MFJ-1270 with KISS for many
- months with no problem. However, I was thinking of picking up an
- additional 1270B for another node. Does anyone have the complete
- story on wether or not there is a problem and if so, what is the
- workaround ? Any information along these lines is appreciated.

- Subject: Getting started.
-
- My dad is getting an HF licence at age 74 after being an operator in WWII.
- He says he sent and received nothing but five-letter groups until the very
- end, when cleartext was allowed. He says that he found he couldn't copy
- cleartext very well at all after all those groups. I sure haven't found that!
- His code was amazingly good after all those years and I think he'll manage
- the theory OK. Anyway, I thought I would get mine too so he would have
- someone to talk to. And besides, I've always been interested. But I'm
- really interested in packet and I figure I'll write the packet exam at
- the same time. My question:
-
- What do I really need to get started? Since I need both HF and VHF equipment
- (don't I?) I need to keep costs low. I have an Atari ST and a 1200 baud
- phone modem. I realize that I need a rig and I assume that a 2m handheld will
- do fine. Can I make use of the 1200 baud modem or do I need to buy/build
- a TNC? What about HF packet? I have blurbs from AEA and MFJ on the modems.
- I can build and design hardware - is this worth doing?
-
- Thanks for any help or encouragement any of you can offer.
- Doug.
-
- P.S. Wish me luck on the code section - Canadian licences require 10 wpm -
- I'm at 12 wpm a bit unreliably, so I should be able to do 10.

-
- Hi,
-
- First off, thanks to all who replyed to my query for a driver
- for the WD ethernet card. Much appreciated.
-
- Now the time has come for me to recompile the whole package. The
- problem is that there is no AZTEK C compiler on campus. Anywhere.
- Most folks have never even heard of it. Its also just a bit to expensive
- to convince the powers that be to buy it....
-
- So, the $64000 question... Has anyone ported the KA9Q package to
- any other C compiler? Specifically the Micro-soft C compiler
- or the Turbo C compiler. We are working on a Turbo C port, but
- it looks a long way off. (Our group is basicly Unix hackers, the
- kind that avoid PC's like the plauge)
-
- Any pointers would be appreciated!

- ARRL NETWORK CONFERENCE --- OCTOBER 1st
- Kossiakoff Center, Applied Physics Laboratory, Columbia MD
-
- First -- let me offer this plea: PLEASE GET YOUR REGISTRATIONS SENT IN ASAP!
- Our biggest logistics hassle is needing to sign a contract with the caterer
- for the buffet lunch. The price of the lunch is included in the registration
- fee of $20. We want to have enough food there, but we can't afford to get
- stuck if we order too much. There is no really convenient place to eat at
- the conference center except for the buffet. So PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE
- send in your registrations to K4NGC as soon as you can. PLEASE!
-
- I have received a list of some 35 papers submitted for the conference and
- have seen some of the contributions. This is going to be an EXCELLENT
- meeting. I'll be posting an agenda just as soon as W4RI and I have gone thru
- one more iteration. There will be sessions on proposed revisions to the
- AX.25 specification, the new PACSAT satellites to be launched early in 1989,
- new modem technology (both "discrete" and DSP), Networking protocols,
- Routing designators, new hardware ideas, and a special session to discuss
- the 220 MHz situation in the light of the FCC's recent actions. Space will
- be provided for people who have hardware to demonstrate.
-
- With the registration material you will receive a map on how to get to the
- Kossiakoff Center. If you want an idea of where it is, look on your Maryland
- map midway between Baltimore and Washington, along US Rte 29. APL is about
- one mile south of MD Rte. 32 and 1/4 mile west of US 29. The closest airport
- is Baltimore-Washington Int'l (BWI).
-
- On Friday nite, Sept.30 we will pick a suitable nearby sleazy bistro for
- people to congregate (probably the infamous Henckels, for aficionados of ham
- sandwiches). The Saturday meeting will be an all-day affair so plan to show
- up by 08:30. Saturday nite we'll find a different pub for repast (probably
- the infamous Roy's Place Too, the other home of the Bender Schmender).

- Subject: World Wide Packet radio listing
-
- Subject: World Wide Packet Listing goes over 3,000 mark
-
- TO: All Packet Radio Users
-
- Welcome to the WONDERFUL WORLD of Packet Radio. Today after receiving some
- updates from out west coast the World Wide Packet Radio Listing, which I
- maintain, went over the 3,000 mark. This listing now is the most complete
- listing available. I hope that these files can help you and all Amateur
- Packet Radio users in knowing where Digipeaters and PBBS's are located in
- the United States and overseas. It contains all known Digipeaters and
- Packet Bulletin Boards (Mail Forwarding) in the 50 states and terriorities.
- In addition it also contains those Digipeaters and Packet Bulletin Boards
- known to be overseas. Please feel free to pass these listings on to as meny
- people as you want. The only way I can maintain this list is by getting the
- widest distribution possible. If you or any of your Ham friends see
- anything incorrect in these listings please let me know so that I can
- correct it. Currently there are six ways you can get this information to
- me. If you distribute PBBS software please include at least the WW-
- LISTS.ARC file in your distribution disk. These files can be used in the
- download areas of the PBBS's. WW-LISTS.ARC contain a seperate file for each
- state and country and can reduce the time and amount of download necessary
- to find out what is in what state or country. In addation if you are
- running WA7MBL PBBS Software and have a copy of FGREP and BIS programs you
- will be able to allow users to search for PBBS by city or what ever string
- they want. The BBS.TXT and DIGI.TXT file have been set up for this purpose.
- If you need a list of PBBS's so that you can keep your Forwarding Files up
- to date, call my landline BBS at 703-680-5970. There is a FWD.BBS file
- which contains the Call Sign of all known PBBS's. The USA Packet dbase
- files are updated daily and loaded into my BBS every Sunday morning.
- Therefor, the list is only 7 days old at the most. The LLBBS also contains
- other information on Packet Radio. Remember, Packet Radio is only as good
- as the listings available telling you where every digipeater/PBBS is. If
- you want a copy of the disk you must send me a disk mailer, one diskette,
- and return postage. I will return the disk to you within 24 hours. Or if
- you want you can call my Land Line BBS at 703-680-5970. The LLBBS will
- handle 300/1200/2400 baud modems.

- If anyone has a big problem with this agenda, let me know ASAP. If all the
- presenters show up to give their papers, we will have to be VERY strict on
- the times allocated. If one speaker has several papers on closely related
- topics, please try to condense them into a single oral presentation. If you
- have submitted a paper and know you will not be here to present it orally,
- please let me know so that we can make schedule adjustments.
-
- To keep speakers from exceeding their time allocations, two swarthy gentlemen
- in trenchcoats, named Guido and No-Neck, have volunteered their services for
- the day.

- Subject: Article in September Telecommunications
-
- The September issue of Telecommunications has an article on digital
- radio for data communications by J.J. McDonnell, Jr of Digital Radio
- Networks, Inc. The article talks about using packet radio for point
- of sale authorizations, ATM transactions, etc. Of course such use
- would require some form of authentication, but the article does not
- mentions such requirements at all.
-
- The worst thing about the article is that it seems to promote use of
- radio to "reduce the traffic demand on existing telephone networks."
- He seems to completely overlook the fact that there is a limited
- amount of spectrum, and one can't add to it as one can add to a wire
- or fiber based system. Nor does he discuss any of the real reasons
- that using radio might be better than wire. By the way, the frequency
- band he talks about using is 928-952 MHz.

- I like to buy a PC Packet Radio Adapter, like the PACCOMM PC-100,
- or the DRSI's PCPA, or the HAPN card.
- Are there more of them?
- Which is the best one ?
- What does they cost ?
- Since they are not right in Europe? , and I am in the USA (Rochester) in
- October, does anybody know an address in Rochester where I can buy
- one?
- Thanks in advance,
- Gerrit.
