-
- So what's with the THENET flames?
-
- Since the sources showed up there has been NO comment in this
- newsgroup. Surely somebody at Software 2000 must have said either
-
- a) "Yes indeed, those guys stole our code and put in German comments" or
- b) "Oops, I guess they really did write their own clone and we apologize".
-
- Any discussion on Compu$erve or elsewhere? Anyone have the right
- C compiler and tried compiling the sources?

-
- A couple of folks (Russ Nelson in particular) have talked about modifying NET
- so that it uses separate file handles for each session, and for tracing and
- logging. It would then not be hard to put a window-managing or virtual-screen
- front end on the program, with one file handle per window/screen. In the
- degenerate case, you'd log to a disk file and have all of the handles point
- to the console, and things would work as they do now.
-
- If someone has done this, or is thinking about doing it... send me bits! I'll
- make sure they get into the next (or a future) release.
-
- Being able to dump trace output into a printer buffer with a fast parallel
- printer on the back side would be massively cool on occasion...

- Subject: Latest level of ROMS for PKT-1??
- Keywords: AEA PKT-1, TAPR, TNC, ROMS
-
- << EAT FLAMING MESONS, FASCIST LINEEATER! >>
- I have a slight difficulty, I bought an AEA PKT-1 on sale, very good price,
- but have noticed that there are a few problems running this tnc as a digi.
- The manufacture (AEA) says: "UUUhhhmmm...we don't have any later revision
- of firmware, try calling the people at TAPR.."
- TAPR sold me a 27256 EPROM part, with absolutly no instructions whatever,
- and then I noticed that the EPROMS in the PKT-1 (the rev 3.1 stuff) is on
- four parts! These are 2764's. After a few phone calls, TAPR sent me some
- cut'n'jumper instructions that seem to have nothing whatever to do with
- the PKT-1...???? So..my questions:
-
- 1-Can a PKT-1 be upgraded to use the latest TAPR firmware??
- 2-Where can I get instructions to do so?? (ie- a cut'n'jumper list that
- actually goes with the PKT-1)
-
- AEA disavows any knowledge of how to do so, and so far, TAPR seems to
- think I'm just kidding them when I say that the schematics don't match.

-
- The EPROM TAPR sold you was for their TNC-2 model, based on a Z80-type
- processor and SIO chip. The AEA PKT-1 is based on the earlier TAPR
- TNC-1 design which uses the MC6809 processor and WD1933 HDLC chip.
- In short, it ain't gonna work. You should probably see if you can get
- your money back.
-
- My recommendation is that you get the WA8DED firmware for the TNC-1.
- It's available on SIMTEL20.ARPA in the file PD2:<CPM.PACKET>DEDTNC1.ARK.1,
- dated August 1987. It's also available on CompuServe's HAMNET in the
- DL9 download section. The version that I'm running is 1.3; I don't
- know if that's the latest or not. Take the hex files provided and
- burn them into two 2764 EPROMS. Remove the four original EPROMs and
- insert the two you just burned into the C000 and E000 sockets. Set
- the TNC to ROM boot (as opposed to NOVRAM) and power it up. It should
- type a greeting at you at 300 baud. Complete documentation is provided
- with the hex files.
-
- The command set used by the WA8DED firmware is completely different
- >from the original TAPR command set but I find it to be much nicer.

- Probably the easiest would be to have someone who can read 27256 ROMs and write
- 2764 ROMs 'cut' the 27256 into 4 parts for you and put it onto 4 2764 PROMs.
- Or, even worse, one person who can read the 27256 and put it on disk, then
- send the disk to someone who can read the disk and write 2764.... (I volunteer
- to write the 4 2764 for you, but I am not sure I can read 27256 PROMs. Will
- check...)
-
- The other option I come up with would be to take the databook (with
- pinouts for both chips), the board, and paper and figuring out what the schematic
- ACTUALLY is for your board, then figuring out the cuts and jumpers.
-
- Unless, of course, someone else here on usenet has already done the cuts/jumps
- and will come out of the woodwork, `cause then 'all your problems are gone'.
-
- I think I like the first way better. Let me know if I can help, I should
- know about my PROM programmer by then.
- ---
- Oh, yes. This all assumes that the 4 sockets on your board cover the same address
- range as that expected by the 27256.....

-
- AN INTRODUCTION TO THE DISASTER RESEARCH CENTER FOR PACKET-RADIO
- Readers. Come to our open house in August !
-
- The Disaster Research Center, the first of its kind and the only
- one in the United States, was established at the Ohio State
- University in 1963 and moved to the University of Delaware in
- 1985. The Center engages in a variety of sociological and
- social science research on group and organizational preparations
- for, responses to, and recovery from community-wide emergencies,
- particularly natural and technological disasters. Since the
- Center's inception, there have been over 496 different field
- studies. Teams have gone to earthquakes in Japan, Chile,
- Yugoslavia, Italy, Iran, El Salvador, Greece, California, and
- Alaska; hurricanes in the southern and eastern United States, as
- well as Japan; floods in Italy, Canada, and more than a dozen
- states; and tornadoes and hazardous chemical incidents in
- Canada, Mexico, and the United States. A dozen cities struck by
- major disasters have been restudied several years after the
- initial research. For purposes of comparison, Center personnel
- have also examined organizational responses to civil
- disturbances and riots.
-
- The Center has a number of professionals on its staff plus
- supporting clerical and secretarial personnel. It is directed
- by Professor E.L. Quarantelli, with the assistance of Professors
- Dennis E. Wenger and Russell R. Dynes, all of the Department of
- Sociology at the University.
-
- Recent studies have focused on: Social and organizational
- aspects of the delivery of mental health services and of
- emergency medical services in mass emergencies; and socio-
- behavioral responses to acute chemical hazards and the problems
- involved in mass evacuation and sheltering. Research underway
- includes the ways in which information relating to disaster is
- processed through news organizations, the organizational and
- public response to the Mexico City earthquake, and the role of
- local emergency response agencies. Center personnel have
- examined legal aspects of governmental responses in disasters,
- the emergence and operation of rumor control centers, mass media
- reporting of community crises, the functioning of relief and
- welfare groups in stress situations, and the handling of the
- dead in catastrophes.
-
- The research provides basic knowledge about group behavior and
- social life in large scale community crises as well as
- information which can be applied to develop more effective plans
- for future disasters. Besides storing its own data collected
- through in-depth interviewing, participant observations, and
- document gathering, the Center serves as a repository for
- materials collected by other agencies and researchers. The
- Center's specialized library, which contains the world's most
- complete collection --over 20,000 items-- on the social and
- behavioral aspects of disasters, is open to all interested
- scholars and public and private agencies involved in emergency
- planning. With over 400 publications, the Center has its own
- book, monograph, and report series. There are close relations
- with Canadian, Mexican, Australian, Swedish, Japanese, and West
- German disaster researchers, a number of whom have been visiting
- research associates at the Center for periods of up to a year,
- and collaborative field research is currently underway with
- groups in Japan and Mexico. An exchange program and very close
- ties with Italian researchers, especially the Mass Emergency
- Program of the Institute of International Sociology in Gorizia,
- Italy.
-
- Center activities have been supported by diverse sources
- including the Health Resources Administration; the Center for
- Applied Social Problems, National Institute of Mental Health;
- the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency; the Water Resource
- Research Program, Department of the Interior; the State of Ohio
- Department of Mental Health; but major funding has been from the
- National Science Foundation, and the Federal Emergency
- Management Agency.
-
- If you would like more information concerning the Disaster
- Research Center or desire an updated Publications List, write to
- Margie Simmons, Office Coordinator, Disaster Research Center,
- University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware, 19716, United States
- of America.

- Summary: use of ampr.org

-
- The intent of "ampr.org" is that it be used WORLDWIDE by amateur radio
- TCP/IP stations, without appending a country code. The reasoning was
- that since amateur radio is an international activity, we already have
- callsigns that are globally unique. Therefore there is no reason to add
- country codes or region names to a domain name that includes a callsign.
- We didn't want to have to add the ".org" field, but DARPA made us do
- it.
-
- In the other direction, the convention is to create your own little
- private subdomain under your callsign. For example, I have three
- machines in my shack with the domain names
-
- sun.ka9q.ampr.org
- pc.ka9q.ampr.org
- switch.ka9q.ampr.org
-
- and another one on a nearby tower named
-
- hill.ka9q.ampr.org
-
- This way you can use any name you want in the first field without
- conflicting with anyone else's naming convention.

-
- I was looking through August's PC Magazine, and saw a "small feature
- (hands on)" on page 46 that describes a 4800 bps packet radio modem
- that allows two pcs to communicate for about a 5 mile range.
-
- The 11 paragraph article does have one line in it that says "You do need
- an FCC license, however". I called the company, and the person I spoke
- with (who was not the Freedom Modem "specialist") said the only thing
- I needed was an external antenna. No mention of the fq it operates
- on, or what kind of license I would need. I asked her to send me any
- literature they have on it.
-
- The article says that it is based on packet technology developed by
- the DoD and can handle packets up to 1010 bytes long.
-
- I wonder if this unit runs on 49MHz, if it is compatible with standard
- TCP/IP implementations, etc. Anyone have any ideas, or know any more
- about it?

- When you have direct access to your rig's modulator and demodulator
- (i.e., bypassing the regular voice pre- and de-emphasis networks)
- you're better off bypassing the filters in the TNC as well. TNC-2s and
- clones have MF-10 switched capacitor filters, and they can be fairly
- easily bypassed by just pulling the chips and soldering a few jumper
- wires to the bottom of the board. I've done that here and it works well.
-
- You must be careful to set your deviation properly when using a direct
- modulator connection, since you are bypassing the limiters that normally
- hold you to 5 KHz or so. If you don't have an IFR or similar service
- monitor, you can still set deviation pretty accurately with a SSB
- receiver for the channel frequency by looking for the carrier nulls that
- correspond to specific values of modulation index. In fact, this
- technique is often more accurate than an IFR, though it is certainly
- more tedious.

-
- While I don't have a solution for the problem Rolfe seems to be having,
- I do have an observation about the differences between a TAPR TNC2 and
- the MFJ-1270B.
-
- I recently read an article in 73 magazine (in the now defunct packet
- column) about how to connect a TNC2 directly to the FM demodulator in a
- transceiver. The author states that the TNC2 includes a switched
- capacitor filter at the input which is supposed to compensate for the
- non-linear audio bandwidth of most transceivers. It seems that many
- transceivers boost the bass response to make up for the tiny speakers
- they use in the units. The switched capacitor filter is supposed to
- compensate for this bass pre-emphasis. (Note that this is in addition
- to the normal pre-emphasis/de-emphasis used in transmitter/receiver).
-
- Having read this article, I decided to look at my packet setup a bit
- closer. Looking at the MFJ-1724 manual, it soon became apparent that
- there was no switched capacitor filter present in the circuit. The MFJ
- board is a licensed copy of the TAPR TNC2 pc-board. The location where
- the switched capacitor filter would normally exist is left empty and a
- few jumper wires bridge the audio to the next stage.
-
- There are a few RCs in the path that may be attempting to do the same
- job the switched capacitor filter did. I have to admit my analog
- theory is rusty enough that I'm not sure what their function might be.
-
- The bottom line is that I can take the FM demodulator output from my
- Kenwood TM-221A and run it directly into the TNC audio input. This
- combination seems to work quite well.
-
- I just thought readers might be interested in this info. I'm happy
- with the MFJ TNC and it seems to work as advertised. Rolfe might want
- to double check his connections and make sure they are correct. His
- setup sounds similar to mine and it seems like it should work.

- About five years ago I saw those at a Motorola private trade show.
- Motorola's hand-held radio terminals were built for a LARGE order from
- IBM (pretty much the whole service force, I'd guess, at least stateside)
- and indeed do use SNA! At least they appear to emulate a 3270, somehow,
- somewhere, according to what they told me.
-
- Also, they (like most Motorola alphanumeric devices) used something
- called Golay Sequential Keying. Anybody know what that is?
-
- While I'm not too fond of SNA (:-) note the Organization named above),
- I suspect that we hams are nowhere near "state of the art" in basic
- digital rf (radio modem) technology. Perhaps we should plagiarize
- >from Motorola rather than from 1962 Bell surplus :-(. Not to mention

- installed a TheNET node, went to the director of JPL and demanded that the
- node be removed from the air, using his allegations of piracy as leverage.
- The director then had one of JPL's patent attorneys order the club to take
- it down immediately, and not replace it.
-
- This action goes well beyond the bounds of good amateur practice, much less
- common decency. In so doing, Ron Raikes established Software 2000 as the
- Lotus Development of amateur radio - for he expressed the same attitude as
- Lotus: "We're it, and if you get in the way of our profits, then you're
- going down." In so doing, he greatly damaged one of the clubs which is
- responsible for much of the good going on in amateur radio: W6VIO has been
- in the forefront of the amateur radio/space activities, and was the station
- that brought the Voyager pictures to slow-scan TV; they're also heavily
- involved in AMSAT, and were one of the primary outlets for the launch
- information net for AMSAT-Oscar 13. What do you think the response they'll
- get the next time that they go to the administration at JPL for something?
-
- Ron, of course, didn't care. He wanted to protect his $69.95 per node, and
- all those juicy $39.95 upgrade fees - the good of ham radio be damned.
-
- There is not a single authentic NET/ROM node left in the Houston area,
- because of the high-handed attitude of Software 2000. They've all been
- erased and reprogrammed with TheNET instead. I've seen Ron's comment on
- CompuServe about "why, Software 2000 is well respected in the amateur
- community"...maybe elsewhere, but not in southeast Texas. Here, it's mud,
- and the W6VIO action hurt even worse. (One of the members there, Courtney
- Duncan, N5BF, comes from here.) Software 2000 has lost all hope of ever
- selling a chip in the Houston area.
-
- I also understand that the current version of NET/ROM refuses to talk to
- TheNET. This, if true, will only be a temporary measure, as someone will
- figure out the problem and fix it; however, it merely reinforces the image.
-
- What do I suggest?
- Throw your NET/ROM in the trash. No, don't do that; erase it and put a
- KISS code in it instead, and then get KA9Q's TCP/IP package (it's freely
- available, for non-commercial use - which translates to freely available
- for the amateur community, since all amateur use is non-commercial). Hang
- a cheapie PC-clone next to it. Run an IP switch instead of the NET/ROM
- switch.
-
- Now, what's REALLY needed is a TNC-2 ROM containing a dedicated IP
- switch...

- What Henry saw is a Motorola KDT-800 portable terminal. It uses a
- proprietary forward error correcting protocol to do a really great
- job of transferring data. It's not just a terminal, it also does
- quite a bit of computing. The box contains 2 CMOS 6803 processors
- and at least 80K of RAM. It is a neat box!
- I haven't played with one since leaving Motorola about 3 years ago,

- Evidently the terminals use a special protocol that is designed to
- provide for a high degree of error correction for the type of problems

-
-
- I posted the net message about "IBM scoops us" on several area packet bbs
- systems knowing full well that we are surrounded by big blue employees in
- this area and at least one of them has to be on the air.
-
- Here is what I received from Errol, WA2SYG, who just happens to be one
- of the guys using the terminal.
-
- 73, Jim
- -------
- Saw your message on a few of the local BBS. I am one of the guys
- you refer to as an IBM TSR.
-
- I know that information, in regards to what we call the "PT"
- which is short for portable terminal, is hard to come by so let
- me tell you some of what I know about it.
-
- The PT is a 28 ounce, battery powered, hand-held terminal with TELCO and RF
- capability. It is composed of the following functional elements:
- A 54-character, dot-matrix liquid-crystal display. The 54 characters are
- displayed on two lines of 27 characters each.
-
- It has set of LCD indicators that signal the state of various functions in the
- PT.
-
- An alphabetic keyboard arranged basically the same as a standard typewriter.
-
- A ten-key numeric keypad arranged in the configuration of a calculator.
-
- Functional keys to control the display, the RF transmitter, and other special
- PT functions.
-
- A hexadecimal/decimal calculator with memory and special function capability.
-
- A digital RF transmitter/receiver.
-
- A duplex modem that can be connected to the public switched network by either
- an acoustic coupler or directly via an RJ 11c jack.
-
- Dual microprocessor architecture which is based on the Motorola 6801 design
-
- One processor is dedicated to the communications function while the other
- handles the unit's data processing.
-
- You wouldn't know it by looking at it externally, but it has 160k bytes of ROM
- and about 90k bytes or RAM.
-
- I know it transmits in the 800Mhz range. I would have to pull the battery to
- give you the exact frequency, but I have monitored the freq on my scanner.
-
- Its the latest in high tech, and I often think of it as IBM star wars, HI.
-
- As I think of its capability I'll jot it down.
-
- You were right in the way it used satellite transmission to get
- to main data bank.
-
- Oh yes, It has two set of batteries. A main battery
- (rechargeable) and a keep-alive (storage retention ) battery for
- RAM and for continuous power to the real-time click. I have been
- using it for over 12hrs before a low battery indication comes on.
- When it drops to 9hrs I usually replace the battery.
-
- Incidentally the charger is also something to behold. It can charge two
- batteries at the same time, one in the PT and a spare in the extra charging
- position. It has two charging rates which is done automatically. Rapid and
- trickle. A deep discharge ability is included to prevent battery memory.
-
- Let me know if you need any other info.
-
- I have some books on it somewhere around here and might be able to scroung up
- some additional info.
-
- Regards. Errol - Wa2syg

-
- I'm just getting a new Yaesu FT-736R up and running, and have run into a
- problem interfacing it with my TNC2 clone, in my case an MFJ-1270B. The
- FT-736 has a data in/out jack that allows direct connection of the TNC to
- the FM modulator and demodulator in the transceiver -- that is, it bypasses
- pre- and de-emphasis circuits in the audio stages. This should be a good
- thing, but the TNC2 already compensates for these by adding pre and de-
- emphasis of it's own. I could take the easy way out and hook it up to the
- external speaker jack and the microphone input, but obviously I'd like to
- use the dedicated connection if it's possible. The most obvious symptom
- on transmit is that the modulation level is way too low, but no packets
- are making it through on receive either. Trimming R76 has no effect at
- all that's discernable when monitoring on another receiver.
-
- Anyone got any ideas?
