- As most of you know I have taken on the impossible task of tring to
- maintain the World Wide Packet Radio Digipeater/PBBS Listing and USA-PKT
- Listing. The cost is getting out of hand on reproduction. What I am
- looking for (IF POSSIBLE) is the donoation of a Offset Press. The Offset
- Press would be used to reproduce the WWPACKET files on a quarterly or semi-
- annual basis and make it available to all at cost of paper, stamps, etc.
- If anyone knows of any available Offset Press please let me know. I have
- had a lot of people ask for copies of these listings. I will begin
- (HOPEFULLY) publishing it on a quarterly basis either on IBM-Formatted disk
- or in paper-back form. It will be also be available on my landline BBS
- (703-680-5970) for anyone who wants it. Please if you can find or see a
- Offset available let me know. These listings I maintain are the MOST
- COMPLETE listing available to any HAM on Packet Radio Bulletin Boards and
- Digipeaters. Unlike one Company that states that theres is the most
- complete with 1400 call signs, mine currently has over 2,211 US and 256
- International call signs and is updated on a daily basis. And I have just
- started on the Internationl files. There listing only comes out once a
- year and found to have lots of errors. The WWPACKET files will be printed
- either quarterly or semi-annual or be available on my BBS updated weekly.

-
- The AX.25 protocol spec is available in paper form from the ARRL.
-
- NET/ROM's internal protocols are described in the NET/ROM user's manual
- >from Software 2000.
-
- The ARPA Internet protocols (TCP/IP, etc) are described in the ARPA RFC
- (Request for Comments) series and also in various MIL-STD documents.
- RFCs are available over the network to Internet sites. They are also
- available from TAPR on floppy disk for the cost of materials and
- mailing. A new book by Douglas Comer on TCP/IP has been published by
- Prentice-Hall; it is an excellent introduction to the subject. Several
- of us have published several papers in the ARRL Computer Networking
- Conference Proceedings regarding the amateur TCP/IP development effort.
- These are available from the ARRL.
-
- Formal descriptions of TEXNET's internal protocols haven't been
- completely published as far as I know, but pieces of them have appeared
- in the ARRL Computer Networking Conference proceedings.
-
- Existing COSI/ROSE code appears to be based on a modified X.25 Packet
- layer. The original X.25 spec is available from several places,
- including bound collections of standards (e.g., Data Communications
- Standards, edited by Folts, published by McGraw-Hill). You should be
- able to find this or similar references in most technical libraries.
- The COSI/ROSE group has also published papers in the ARRL Computer
- Networking Conferences, but one must be careful to distinguish between
- what has been discussed and promised vs what has actually been done.

- Subject: Packet work on commercial radio-modems
- Keywords: Commercial radio modems
- Reply-To: sadler@rocky.CS.WISC.edu (Jonathan Sadler)
-
- Has anyone looked at takeing dedicated radio-modems (like the freedom
- wireless modem)? Basically this modem opens a perminant connection to
- another station, er. modem, on the same frequency (DIP switch selectable)
- The modem then does standard HDLC framing, and watchesfor a special
- command sequence to place it in a command mode. (Gee, doesn't this
- sound alot like a standard TNC???)
-
- Differences I have found so far:
-
- - This uses straight X.25, not AX.25. Consequently the address field
- is only 8 bits wide, and the modem can only connect to 255 other modems.
- - This modem can do 9600 bps, and claims to do higher (I havn't been
- able to try any other speeds). Could be interesting for a dedicated
- IP link if we could get KISS up on it....
- - The modem also integrates the tranciever in it. Different antennas
- are available. 1/4, 3/4, and 1-1/4 wave. the 1+1/4 wave claims to
- have an 18 mi. range. All together, the modem and tranciever is
- 3"Wx2"Hx4"D. Kinda small.
-
- Any ideas? I'm about ready to call the maker of this unit and ask for detailed
- info on the internals so that I can get KISS.
-
- Also, does anyone know what kind of commercial stipulations there would be?
-

- Subject: Re: SLIP Info please?
- Summary: SLIP definition
- References: <401@jc3b21.UUCP>
-
- I don't think I've seen a formal description of SLIP, but it is very
- simple. It is just a framing technique suitable for carrying IP
- datagrams (or whatever you want) on asynchronous links.
-
- Four special characters are defined. They are as follows:
-
- <Frame End> C0 hex
- <Frame Esc> DB
- <Transposed Frame End> DC
- <Transposed Frame Esc> DD
-
- Transmitter Operation
-
- The transmitter sends the frame a byte at a time, ending it with the
- <Frame End> character. If a <Frame End> character occurs in the body of
- the frame, it is replaced by the two character sequence <Frame Esc>,
- <Transposed Frame End>. Similarly, if a <Frame Esc> character occurs in
- the body of the frame, it is replaced by the two byte sequence <Frame
- Esc>, <Transposed Frame Esc>.
-
- Receiver Operation
-
- The receiver appends incoming bytes to a reassembly buffer, passing
- whatever has been accumulated up to the next layer when it sees a <Frame
- End> character. (The <Frame End> itself is not added to the buffer). The
- receiver maintains a one-bit "escaped" flag that is set whenever it sees
- a <Frame Esc> character. (The <Frame Esc> character itself is NOT added
- to the reassembly buffer). If the receiver then sees either a
- <Transposed Frame End> or a <Transposed Frame Esc> while in "escaped"
- mode, it is translated to a <Frame End> or a <Frame Esc>, respectively,
- and adds it to the reassembly buffer. Regardless of the character
- received while in escaped mode, the "escaped" flag is cleared. If the
- <Transposed Frame End> or <Transposed Frame Esc> characters are received
- while NOT in "escaped" mode, no special action is necessary; they are
- added to the reassembly buffer unchanged.
-
- Note that the <Frame End> character is *never* sent over the line except
- as an actual end-of-frame indication.
-
- The original SLIP put <Frame End> characters only at the end of each
- frame. I.e., a series of back-to-back frames would be separated by only
- a single <Frame End>. I have made a minor, backward compatible change to
- the protocol that puts a <Frame End> in front of each frame as well.
- This adds a very small bit of overhead (back-to-back frames are now
- separated by two <Frame End> characters) but it improves performance
- over noisy links by forcing the receiver into a known state at the
- beginning of each new frame.
-
- When used to send IP datagrams over phone lines, the datagrams are
- encapsulated directly in frames formatted as described here; no
- additional header is carried. There has been considerable discussion
- about the need for such a header, but nothing has actually come into
- use, as far as I know.
-
- I use SLIP in a different way between a system running my TCP/IP
- software and a KISS TNC. There I use SLIP style framing to carry AX.25
- frames and control messages between the TNC and host, and there is a
- one-byte "type" field at the beginning of each frame. For details, see
- the paper by K3MC and myself in last year's ARRL Computer Networking
- Conference proceedings. (The same article also described SLIP in
- detail).

- Sorry about that. I've been meaning to get it up on louie.udel.edu
- (notice the name), but things have a been a little hectic here. I'll
- take the diskettes to work today and see if I can find a drive to read
- them. At last report, we are having problems with the software that
- reads 720K diskettes (3.5 inch). If this fails, I'll try to get the
- format converted some time this weekend, and post early next week.

- I know that it flies in the face of nature and all that, but has
- anybody considered implementing the IP layer of NET.EXE on a TNC?
-
- The idea is that an AMPRNET user can leave the tnc on all the time,
- along with the radio, and thus provide IP routing services and keep
- the network connected. A lot of people either do not want to or
- cannot leave a PC on 24hrs a day (e.g. because of the noise level :-),
- but a TNC is silent.

- Subject: Protocol standards
-
- For a long time I've been irritated by the lack of a standard,
- THE standard, for packet-radio file transfer.
-
- There are several protocols in use, like YAPP, KERMIT, XMODEM etc.
- YAPP is quite a good one, but the problem is that you need a PC
- to use it, and you also "have" to use the YAPP terminalprogram.
- Since neither the sourcecode nor some techn. info is available it is
- almost impossible to implement it in "homebrew" programs.
-
- KERMIT is perhaps the best protocol to use, because it is already
- implemented on the most common computertypes, and complete source is
- available. The disadvantage using KERMIT is that almost all current
- mailboxs use YAPP.
-
- Does anybody have any thoughts on this question ????????

- Subject: World Wide Listing for Packet Radio
-
- *****************************************************************
- * All PBBS Operators please pass to all International Countries *
- *****************************************************************
-
-
- To: All Packet Users and PBBS Operators
-
- The K4NGC Packet Radio Digipeater and PBBS Listing has gone International.
- Anyone wishing to become a point of contact within his/her country please
- contact me. The job would be to supply me with changes, additions and
- deletions occurring within your country for Digipeaters and Packet Bulletin
- Boards. I am maintaining the World Wide Listing of Packet Bulletin Boards
- and Digipeaters. Data can be sent by mail, packet radio, ARPANET, or
- uploaded to my PBBS. Who ever becomes the Point of Contact will receive a
- disk from me every three months listing all known PBBS's and Digipeaters
- World Wide for local distribution. Here is an easy way to get a copy of
- the list. It will be supplied in 40 track, double sided, double density
- IBM-PC Format. You may distribute to who every you want to within or
- without your country. This is the ONLY listing that is updated daily and
- made available at no cost (Except for disk, mailer, and postage). In
- addition It is the only accurate (Updated daily) and complete listing of
- Digipeaters and PBBS's. As of 21 June 1988 is has over 2,561 Digipeaters
- and PBBS's listed. It has Digipeaters and PBBS's from Canada, France,
- Hungary, Italy, Norway, Yugoslavia, Japan, Austrlia, West Germany, Great
- Britain, and the United States. I would like to see it more complete then
- that. There are a large number of countries which are not listed and
- should be. Here is a chance of producing a COMPLETE listing of Activity in
- Packet Radio.
-
- If you want to become the point of contact for your country please provide
- the following information AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. There will only be one
- Point of Contact per country.
-
- 1. Full Name
- 2. Mailing Address (Postal Address)
- 3. Packet Address (e.g., K4NGC @ K4NGC)
- 4. ARPANET Address (If you have one)
- 5. Home Telephone number (To include country code).
