  16. This section provides some helpful information on using the Configuration
  17. page. Most configuration settings are determined on installation
  18. of AltaVista Search My Computer.

  30. AltaVista Search My Computer allows you to search indexes that
  31. exist at many locations:
  32. <UL>
  33. <LI>On your local personal computer
  34. <LI>Within your company's intranet
  35. <LI>Outside your company (internet) 
  36. </UL>

  39. To add or remove an index from the Search menu, click the associated
  40. checkbox in the AltaVista Search Indexes table.

  43. <H4><A NAME="searchservice">Search </A>Indexes </H4>
  44.  
  45. <P>
  46. AltaVista sites offer different types of search indexes. For example,
  47. the main AltaVista site offers "The Web" and "Usenet"
  48. as services. To change the Search indexes, use the <A HREF="#configsetting">Configure Search Menu</A>
  49. table.
  50. <H4>Network Connections and proxies </H4>
  51.  
  52. <P>
  53. AltaVista Search My Computer requires internet proxy and port
  54. information to perform search queries. A proxy is only required
  55. inside a firewall. The proxy information is automatically detected
  56. from a Netscape or Internet Explorer browser, and should only
  57. be changed if the detection failed, or an alternative browser
  58. is used. To change settings, use the <A href="#advsetting">Advanced Settings</A>
  59. table. 
  60. <H4>Changing the Configuration Page settings</H4>
  61.  
  62. <P>
  63. Multiple changes can be made to the Configuration page before
  64. clicking the Submit button. It is not necessary to click the Submit
  65. button each time an option is changed in the tables.

  67. <H4>Technical Note - what is 127.0.0.1:port? </H4>
  68. <P>
  69. The AltaVista Search Indexes table lists the Index URL location as 127.0.0.1:port 
  70. for My Computer All, My Computer Mail, My Computer Documents. This location is  
  71. displayed when you submit a query, or use any of the AltaVista Search My Computer 
  72. features.

  74. This location is <I>not</I> a server address. 
  75. <P>
  76. In AltaVista Search My Computer the browser and indexer are on the same host
  77. and communicate with each other using TCP/IP. The software uses the address 
  78. 127.0.0.1:port to ensure requests are received by and sent to <I>your</I> personal 
  79. computer's TCP/IP address. It is commonly known as an IP loopback address, 
  80. and is equivalent to a "localhost" address.

  83. <H2><A NAME="configsetting">Configure Search Menu settings</A>

  87. The Configure Search Menu table allows you to change the following
  88. settings:

  91. <LI><A href="#addservice">Add AltaVista Search index</A> from a host
  92. <LI><A href="#selectdefault">Select a default search menu option</A>

  98. <H3><A NAME="delete">To delete a search index</A> from the AltaVista
  99. Search Indexes table </H3>

  102. <LI>Go to the Configure Search Menu table
  103. <LI>In the section labeled "Delete from above list",
  104. select an <A HREF="#searchservice">index</A> to remove from the
  105. list of services
  106. <LI>Click the Submit button.

  110. <B>Note</B>: Only delete a search index when the index is no longer
  111. valid.

  113. To remove an index from the Search menu, it is easier to deselect
  114. the associated checkbox in the AltaVista Search Indexes 
  115. table. After you remove an <A HREF="#searchservice">index</A>
  116. from the table, you cannot use that index unless you add it to
  117. the table again.

  120. <H3><A NAME="addservice">To add an AltaVista Search index</A>
  121. </H3>

  124. <LI>Go to the Configure Search Menu table
  125. <LI>In the section labeled "Add AltaVista Search Index",
  126. enter the URL of the search index. (To add the search index of
  127. the AltaVista site, for example, enter altavista.digital.com)

  129. <LI>Click the Submit button 
  130. <LI>After you add an index to the table, you can search the index
  131. using AltaVista Search.

  134. <B>Note</B>: When adding an index, you enter a host name. AltaVista Search 
  135. My Computer contacts the host, and the host lists all available indexes. 
  136. Any indexes missing from the Configuration page are added automatically.

  139. <H3><A NAME="selectdefault">To select a default search menu option</A>
  140. </H3>

  143. <LI>Go to the Configure Search Menu table
  144. <LI>In the section labeled "Default Search Menu Option",
  145. select an option as the default displayed from the list of services
  146. <LI>Click the Submit button. 
  147. <LI>The service selected is displayed as the default search menu
  148. option.

  153. <H2><A NAME="advsetting">Advanced Settings</A> </H2>

  156. The advanced settings configuration determines:
  157. <OL>
  158. <LI>The proxies used
  159. <LI>The number of search results to return in the display
  160. <LI>The server port where AltaVista Search My Computer listens
  161. to browser requests.

  165. The settings displayed in the table are setup on installation
  166. of AltaVista Search My Computer. Use the advanced settings table
  167. to:

  178. in the web browser </A></H3>

  191. <H3><A NAME="enterproxy">To change proxy information</A> </H3>
  192.  
  193. <P>
  194. A proxy is used to access a site outside a firewall. If the proxy
  195. is incorrect, users inside the firewall are unable to connect
  196. to external sites. The proxy is setup during installation of AltaVista
  197. Search My Computer, and settings are displayed and loaded automatically.
  198. To change the settings:

  200. <LI>Go to the Advanced Settings table
  201. <LI>In the section labeled "Use internet proxy information
  202. defined in web browser?" select No, to manually enter internet
  203. proxy information. 
  204. <LI>Click the Submit button, then open the Configuration Page
  205. again to display the proxy options.
  206. <LI>In the section labeled "Enter Proxy here", enter
  207. the new proxy URL and the proxy port number (for example, www-proxy.mycompany.com:8080)
  208. <BR>You can specify no proxy by leaving the proxy field empty.
  209. <LI>In the section labeled "Enter a list of domains that
  210. do not use a proxy", enter any domains that the browser accesses
  211. directly, rather than via the proxy.

  217. <H3><A NAME="numReturn">To change the number of results returned</A>
  218. </H3>

  222. <LI>Enter the number of results to return in the field provided.

  229. <H3><A NAME="port">To change server port</A> </H3>
  230.  
  231. <P>
  232. AltaVista Search My Computer listens to browser requests at the
  233. server port location. The default port used is 6688. The location
  234. may need to be changed if there are conflicts between the software
  235. that uses the port. To change the server port:

  237. <LI>Go to the Advanced Settings table
  238. <LI>In the section labeled "Server Port", enter the
  239. new server port location
  240. <LI>Click the Submit button.
