  8. UNDP: A global two-way information system via the Internet

  10. Have you ever wondered how you could find someone who works in the
  11. United Nations, and then send a message to them? Or find out some
  12. information about the UN and what it does? Many people inside the
  13. UN system have, and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) has found
  14. a partial solution, using the Internet.
  15.  
  16. UNDP has linked its internal e-mail system (Higgins) to an Internet
  17. gateway, and established an Internet Server as part of its New York
  18. Headquarters' central LAN services. Through the Internet Server,
  19. UNDP is beginning to make a contribution to Internet's global
  20. information resources.

  22. You can use "gopher" software to access the UNDP Internet server's
  23. host at nywork1.undp.org. You'll see a menu of information:

  25.      - The UN, what it is, what it does. Here you'll find
  26.        descriptions of the UN System's Structure, addresses of
  27.        Country Offices, Inter-Agency Bodies, Special Missions,
  28.        Refugee Camps, UN Info Centers, Online Databases (by name
  29.        only at this point), Organizational descriptions, Member
  30.        Countries & Missions, Associated Bodies & Programmes, Info
  31.        Services, Databases, Applications Software, Sales Offices,
  32.        Collections of UN System Publications, Resources including
  33.        UN Volunteers, Fellowships & Scholarships, Personnel, Goods
  34.        & Services & Subcontracts... and a whole menu on Development
  35.        Activities & Capital Financing Activities with lots of

  39.      - Documents from the recent UN Conference on Development
  40.        (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro (documents are listed by
  41.        title, or you can do a free-text search);
  42.  
  43.      - A UNDP Directory (with phone numbers and Internet
  44.        addresses).

  46. You can also query a "who is" facility to find out how to reach
  47. someone you think works in UNDP--even if you're not 100 percent
  48. sure of their whole name. Send a message to whois@undp.org and in
  49. the text of the message just type "who is ___", with some letters
  50. from the person's name (first or last). The message is received by
  51. the UNDP Internet server, which conducts a search of the internal
  52. E-mail list. In a few seconds, you'll see a list of "hits" with
  53. their phone numbers and Internet addresses. You can then follow
  54. through with a message that will show up in your recipient's
  55. "inbox" on the internal system.

  57. UNDP's "development partners" can request an account on the
  58. headquarters Internet server and dial in direct to access
  59. information stored there, helpful to those who do not have their
  60. own Internet access vehicle. Available information includes a
  61. growing array of "General UNDP Infobases". These include the
  62. "Country Field Office" directory, listing all staff in offices
  63. around the world, plus address, phone and E-mail information.

  65. More "Infobases" of general interest will be available online soon
  66. through the Internet Server. To see them, just logon!
