- Global Configuration Parameters
- Global configuration parameters affect all three types of server
- scans. All of these parameters are found and configured in the
- Configuration Options menu. They are:
- ■ Time Format
- ■ Infected File Directory
- ■ User Group Notification List
-
- Time Format
- Use the Time Format parameter to select either standard or military
- time formats. With the exception of the time displayed in military
- format in your log file, all other LANProtect screens and reports
- assume the format selected with the Time Format parameter.
- To select a time format:
- 1. Select Server Scan Configuration | Time Format.
- The Time Format menu appears.
- 2. Highlight either time format and press <Enter> to select your
- choice.
- The Configuration Options menu reappears.
-
-
- Infected File Directory
- The infected file directory defaults to a subdirectory called VIRUS
- under the directory where LANProtect was installed. When viruses
- are detected, all of the scans that are configured to move infected
- files upon virus detection will use this directory to quarantine
- infected files. The infected file retains its original file name
- in the virus directory. If an infected file has the same name as
- a file existing in the virus directory, LANProtect renames the
- newly infected file with the .VIR extension, and incrementally
- renames any subsequent file name extensions (.V01, .V02, etc.).
- LANProtect also keeps track of the infected file■s original path in
- the VIRUS.ID file.
- To change the infected file directory:
- 1. Select Server Scan Configuration |
- Infected File Directory.
- A dialog box displays the current path and prompts for a new
- path.
- 2. Press <Enter> to accept the current directory or change the
- volume and/or directory by backspacing over the existing path,
- typing the path of the new directory, and pressing <Enter>.
- If the directory does not exist, a dialog box asks, ■Create
- the Directory■?
-
- 3. Select Yes to create the directory or No to retype the path.
-
-
- User Group Notification List
- With LANProtect you can specify which Novell NetWare user group(s)
- will be notified when LANProtect detects a virus. If a user
- belongs to one of the groups listed in the User Group Notification
- List when the Real Time File scan is active and a virus is
- detected, the user■s computer sounds an alarm and a standard
- NetWare message is sent to the workstation. If the Prescheduled
- Server or Manual Server scan is active, the user is notified when
- the scan is complete and advised to view the log file to see the
- results of the scan. Users can clear the message by pressing
- <Ctrl><Enter> in DOS or clicking OK in Windows. Users who are not
- logged in at the time of the event will be notified when they log
- in via the delayed message utility, MSGDIS.
-
- LANProtect also uses MHS, a NetWare message handling system, as an
- additional way of notifying the appropriate people of LANProtect
- activity. If you do not have MHS on your system, you will receive
- only broadcasts and messages via LANProtect. All users in the User
-
- Group Notification List who are also members of MHS will receive
- MHS notification of LANProtect■s activities as well as the
- LANProtect broadcasts. If you configure LANProtect to notify the
- offending user in the Real Time File scan, that user will also be
- notified via MHS if that user is a member of MHS. Refer to the MHS
- manual for instructions on adding users to the list.
-
- To create the list of Novell NetWare user group(s) to be notified:
- 1. Select Server Scan Configuration | User Group Notification
- List.
- The Selected Groups list box appears. User groups that have already
- been selected appears in the box.
- 2. Press <Ins> to add user group(s) to the list.
- The Available Groups list box appears.
- 3. Using the arrow keys, highlight a group and press <Enter> to
- add it to the list.
- The group appears in the Selected Groups list box. Repeat steps 2
- and 3 to add more groups.
- 4. Remove a group from the Selected Groups list box by
- highlighting the name of the group and pressing <Del>.
- The group is moved into the Available Groups list box.
- 5. Press <Esc> to save the list and return to the Configuration
- Options menu.
- Users on the User Group Notification List can also receive messages
- of events that occurred while they were not logged in. LANProtect
- includes a delayed message utility, MSGDIS, that keeps track of all
- messages that were broadcasted and users on the notification list
- who were not logged in at the time the message was broadcasted.
- MSGDIS relays the messages to users when they log in. Once you
- view delayed messages upon login, you can chose to delete or save
- them. If you save them, you will be notified that they are there
- each time you log in. If you only want to be notified with new
- messages that occurred while you were logged out, you must delete
- the message file after viewing it.
- To receive delayed messages upon login:
- 1. Enter the following line in your system
- login script:
- #SYS:\PUBLIC\MSGDIS.EXE
- If LANProtect broadcasted messages while you were logged out,
- you will be notified of the messages upon login. The messages
- are stored in the SERVICE directory in the LANProtect
- installation directory.
- Note: MSGDIS only functions when the LANProtect NLM is loaded.
- 2. View the message(s).
-
- 3. Select Yes or No to delete the message(s).
- Configuration Similarities
- Generally the configuration parameters for each type of scan are
- different. However, within the configurations of the individual
- scan types, there are similar configuration parameters. The
- following table discusses the configuration options that exist for
- each server scan. The discussion on the individual configurations
- for each scan type lists more detailed procedures.
- Configuration Description
- File Types to Scan
- You may scan either DOS files or Macintosh files, or if you have
- both Macintosh and DOS files on your file server, you may scan
- both.
- Scan Volume/Directory
- You may chose which directories to scan on each volume. Action on
- Virus Detection You may chose to wipe out, move, leave alone, or
- rename virus-infected files.
- Action on Scan Completion
- You can choose to generate a report, where to send the report, and
- to run an NLM if a virus was or was not found when a scan is
- complete. All of the server scans are preconfigured to
- reflect maximum security. However, you may change each
- configuration and customize the scan. Configuration impacts
- security level, which files will be scanned, who will be notified
- when infected files are found, and how infected files are handled.
- Configuring the Prescheduled Server Scan
- The Prescheduled Server scan scans the server on a predetermined
- day and time. It can be configured to scan every day, once a week,
- once a month, or not at all. This type of scan may be good to
- perform during the night or when network traffic is greatly
- reduced. The Prescheduled Server scan does not greatly reduce the
- performance of your server while operating, but rather, the scan
- slows down or sleeps when network utilization is high. The
- following tree displays the options available for configuring the
- Prescheduled Server Scan.
-
- Frequency of Scan
- Frequency of Scan refers to how often LANProtect will scan the
- server volumes.
- To set the frequency of the scan:
- 1. Select Server Scan Configuration | Prescheduled Server Scan |
- Frequency of Scan.
- A list box displays frequency choices.
-
- 2. Highlight your choice and press <Enter>.
- Your choice appears in the Frequency of Scan field.
- Note: Steps 3 and 4 refer to additional steps required when you
- opt to scan once a week or once a month, respectively.
- 3. Highlight the day you want LANProtect to scan your server and
- press <Enter>.
-
- The selected day appears in the Frequency of Scan field.
- 4. Identify the day of the month (e.g., 1 for the 1st day of the
- month, 2 for the second day of the month, etc.) that you want
- LANProtect to scan your server.
- Note: Entering 31 tells LANProtect to run a scan
- on the last day of each month regardless of the number of days in
- the month. Remember that February has only 28 (or 29) days.
- Setting the scan to run on day 29 could result in no scan being run
- in February. The month you select appears in the Frequency of Scan
- field.
-
- Time to Start Scan

- take place.
- To set the time of day LANProtect will start to scan:

- pressing <Del>. You will be prompted to confirm the deletion.
- Highlight Yes or No and press <Enter>.
- 5. Press <Esc> to save the list and return to the File Types to
