- My two cents:
-
- It is my impression that under the system we had until recently, by
- which I mean that evil monopoly, Bell Canada, being the only phone
- service available, the paying Canadian public was overcharged for
- long distance services.
-
- This is what some people would have us believe.
-
- Now they come along and say that any company is allowed to apply and
- deal in long distance services. They do so and up spring more than
- a few companies offering seemingly impossibly cheap rates which could
- save you, the comsumer, up to 50% on your phone bill.
-
- How can they do this? you might ask. Is this not proof that Bell
- has been ripping us off for years.
-
- For me the answer is a resounding no.
-
- I lived for 1 year in England and 1 year in Germany, and have seen how
- their phone systems work. My particular beef is the idea of paying
- for every local call from a private telephone. Bell Canada, on the
- other hand charges a low monthly rate for unlimited use, and subsidizes
- this rate by using revenues generated by long distance telephone calls.
-
- Canadians have come to see a telephone as a natural convenience. Multiple
- phone lines and people casually making long local calls are commonplace
- in my experience. This could change if nothing is done to stop it.
-
- To my knowledge, the fledgling long distance companies are not required
- to subsidize local calls - after all, it's none of their business - and
- in fact they are at the moment given huge breaks on the use of Bell
- owned hardware; all this because someone thinks it unfair to allow one
- company to exclusively offer a service. Even if it is one of the
- best and most affordable systems in the world.
-
- I have never had problems with Bell Canada myself, including multiple
- residence lines, setting up new accounts, moving telephone numbers
- to new residences, or servicing problems on the lines.
-
- For these reasons, I plan to support Bell Canada, and continue with
- my current services.
