- Actually, this varies by state and type of gun. Here in
- Washington, for example, the police can put a 30 day hold on
- handgun sales in cases of open criminal charges, pending
- criminal proceedings, pending commitment proceedings,
- outstanding warrants, and arrests for crimes of violence if
- the local jurisdiction doesn't have records of the
- disposition of that case. Beyond 30 days the hold may be
- extended in 30 day increments if approved by a local
- district court or municipal court. The buyer gets notice of
- each hold and extension.
