  9. i'm a first year grad student.  i can do most of the homework assigned
  10. to me.  i can pass tests i have to take.  i can usually understand
  11. proofs of theorems that we're studying, given some thought.  i think
  12. that with a lot of work, i can pass my orals.

  14. however, what's the deal with this thesis thing? what happens if you
  15. simply cannot prove whatever your advisor assigned?
