- Rumour has it that before Calculus was written, Spivak was writing a
- book that he had spent a long time on. His colleagues noticed that
- he would always bring his writings around, so he would actually have
- to lug tons of paper. Since the sheets of paper were yellow, his
- colleagues called it the "Yellow Pig."
-
- Here's where my memory gets very shaky. I think his proposed book
- eventually got rejected and was never published and so when he
- wrote "Calculus," he dedicated the book to his Yellow Pig.
- (Someone tells me that the Yellow Pig was actually the text of
- "Calculus," but I'm not sure.)
-
- For more references, check out the dedication in the front of the book
- and also the index (under "pig").
-
- I used Spivak's book in my freshman year and I loved it, despite the
- errors that still exist in the second edition. (Anyone notice that the
- partial fractions problem is really messed up? The question is posed
- twice, but *both* of them have different typos.)
-
-
- Cheers!
