- Someone asked about what I posted about FRAM oil filters destroying
- my Porsche engine and Fram's response. For inquiring minds this this
- the info:
- This occured in 1990 I think with my 1986 944 Turbo.
- I had the oil changed by Mr BadWrench (who used a Fram). No oil
- leak at idle. Under engine belly pan (for aerodynamics) caught
- leaking oil. Driving a week after oil change when oil light
- comes on. Damage already done. Change oil again in hopes it
- was caught in time - no luck, died soon after. Call to garage,
- garage called Fram, Fram called me. Fram said "We know about this
- problem. We'll have someone look at car, (you) gather estimates of
- cost to repair." They didn't try to weasel out of anything and I didn't
- have to take them to court. They proved it to themselves and offered
- a settlement. Since the engine was expensive to repair, they chose to
- just pay me for the whole car. All in all they were very good about it.
- I believe if they had not stood behind their product I would have been
- unable to get any satisfaction short of a new (Fram) filter.
-
- A little background: The Fram filter's gasket was the wrong size.
- I heard from a friend (with a 944) that the local quick lube place
- had been told by Fram to stop using the (Fram recommended) filter
- on Porsches. I suspect that it was a case of a bad batch of filters
- as opposed to a bad design. For those of you interested, I believe
- that Purolator may make the Porsche filters.
