- Alternators in cars include a regulator which maintains output voltage by
- controlling field current. If you underdrive the shaft, the regulator will
- compensate by running more current. Where does this current come from? From
- shaft power. Any benefit? Hardly. In fact, if you consistently have to run
- excess field current, it's harder on the regulator pass transistor and
- the brushes.

- The water pump is another matter, and things may be improved -or worsened -
- by underdriving that. It depends on whether you have too much cooling
- capacity, whether your pump is cavitating at high RPM, etc.

- All in all, it looks like the only benefit is the appearance (and the
- marginal improvement in acceleration due to less weight in your wallet).
