- Many people agree that the arrival of the unions was mostly a good thing.
- However, people also agree that the original function of the unions has
- been perverted to less useful purposes.

- The domestic manufacturer doesn't listen. How do you think they got
- in the mess they are in now?
-
- > Chronic bitching about the big three here in r.a does little good, ...
-
- It allows people to exchange ideas and points of view at light speed.
- Some people, it appears, use this newsgroup to make part of their
- buying decisions. It *does* affect the automakers.

-
- True, in a way. However, I don't know anyone (who is not in a big
- union) who considers the average UAW member to be a "Poor Working Stiff."
- Most college educated people do not make the same kind of money that a
- PWS does. It's hard for a $25k wage-earner to feel sorry for a $50k
- UAW member who has better vacations, health care, etc. The $25k person
- will go for the best car every time. Sure, what goes around comes around
- and poor auto sales by the Big Three translate into a poor economy. I
- may even lose my job because of it. I just can't be the sucker that
- rewards poor quality buy buying it.
-
- The 'Big Boys' in GM, Ford, etc. management don't care about me, the
- consumer, it's true. However, I don't really believe that the average
- UAW member really gives a rats ass about my problems with a Ford
- Mustang. Have they ever gone on strike to protest management's forcing
- them to build an inferior product? No. Have they ever admitted to
- building an inferior product? No, not at the time. The standard line
- is; 'We made a few mistakes in the past, but now our quality problems
- are all under control.' That was the same line I heard in 1985 when I
- made the mistake of buying domestic. When will that line be true? 1999?
-
- When I see unions pushing for multi-skills training, profit sharing,
- and quality control (ie. more voice in management) then, I will feel
- sorry for the out of work UAW worker.
