- Most of us here are lucky to have the society support our network
- traffic. I was interested in the rates to get similiar services
- in India. I contacted UUNET India (a new joint venture with the UUNET
- USA) for upcoming network services there. I have included the copy from
- UUNET INDIA. (Conversion rates : $1 ~= Rs. 30)
-
-
- I would like to find out the rates for other countries for comparision
- and suggestions on what/how can an aspiring engineer (me in some near future
- and a bunch of friends back in India) do to get a university or governement
- research organization to provide us a feed to Internet or other international
- organization.
-
-
- Thanks in advance for any help,
- Chandresh patel

-
- Thank you for your interest in UUNET INDIA's operations.
-
- Here is a brief outline of what is going on here.
-
- Users in India have to go through UUNET INDIA's hub in Hyderabad, i.e. directly
- dial into it, at night if they please to save on long distance charges as there
- is a 75% discount after 10:00 p.m. By the end of the year we will have nodes
- operational in Delhi, Madras, Bangalore and Bombay from which all international
- mail will be routed to UUNET via the Hyderabad hub.
-
- Right now international e-mail is available to subscribers who are willing to
- get to us here in Hyderabad. Our system polls UUNET, U.S.A. twice a day as of
- now (this will be increased as traffic increases to probably hourly). The
- poll timings now are:
-
- 8:00-9:00 am IST - to pick up all mail from the U.S. and also send any mail.
- 6:00-7:00 pm IST - to deliver all mail from India and also pick up.
-
- This ensures that there is a turnaround time of only a day/night at the most.
- i.e. if you send a message to India in the evening you should expect a reply
- by the next morning and vice-versa. A special request for immediate transfer
- is supported by using a header in the text of the message indicating this,
- but this costs Rs. 30/- extra a shot and is available only from the Indian
- end.
-
-
- The charges are as follows:
-
- Annual subscription : Rs. 15,000.
- Connect time charge : Inbound - Rs. 90 per hour (minimum of 2 mins.)
- Local Outbound - Rs. 120 per hour (minimum of 4 mins.)
- International E-mail: Rs. 7 per KB (which includes all headers etc also)
- with a minimum of 2 KB per session of mail sent/received.
- Subscribers in India will have to pay for international mail they receive
- as well as of now.
-
- The rates for access to our local hubs in the cities mentioned above are not
- yet finalized. Access via I-NET (the Indian X.25 PDN) is also envisaged
- over the next few months.
-
- We are offering Public Domain Source Archives on tape and USENET News will
- be offered only after we get our leased connection to the U.S. which might
- take another 4 months or so. At that point mail received will not have to
- be paid for by subscribers here. Arrangements are being made so that it will
- be paid for by the sender from the U.S./International end. AlterNet
- (TCP/IP) service will also commence at that time.
-
- As far as equipment goes the least you require is a PC/XT running DOS even
- though a Unix box would be strongly suggested for non-individuals. You
- also need an error correcting modem. Our Hyderabad hub modems support
- protocols upto V32/V42/V42bis.
-
- Our other services include, turnkey network design/implementation for
- organizations in India and elsewhere.
-
- Hope this has answered most of your questions. There has been quite an
- overwhelming response to the article on USENET so please understand the
- reason for this delay in replying to your query.
