- MACEDONIAN CONSULATE IN GERMANY

- Skopje. The Republic of Macedonia will open a General Consulate
- in the German capital of Bonn, according to a statement issued
- by Germany's Consul General in Skopje, the Macedonian capital.
- Hans Lothaer Stephan said his government had agreed to the
- Macedonian government's request for a consulate to be opened.

- PANIC REMAINS YUGO PM

- Skopje. Milan Panic has remained Prime Minister of Federal
- Yugoslavia after winning a tight 18 to 17 votes in the upper
- house of parliament.
- Panic received a vote of no confidence in the Yugoslav lower
- house, 94 votes to 24. The no confidence motion was put forward
- by the President of the Serbian Radical Party, Vojislav Seselj.
- The lower house also decided that Macedonia should not be
- recognised until the European Community and United Nations do so
- first, otherwise, it was claimed, "such an act would create
- instability in the Balkans."

- MACEDONIAN PARTY IN BULGARIA

- Skopje. Ethnic Macedonian in Bulgaria are on the verge of forming
- a political party. The Macedonian Democratic Party's objective
- is to "affirm contemporary aspects of Macedonism." The Bulgarian
- newspaper, "Duma," claims that this party is part of a
- "nationalistic conspiracy" to legalise the outlawed Macedonian
- Party in Bulgaria, OMO Ilinden, whose aim is to manipulate people
- about the up coming census (in early December). Duma added that
- the Bulgarian courts would not register the Macedonian Democratic
- Party, just as it refused to register OMO Ilinden.

- BORDER TRADE WITH BULGARIA SUCCESSFUL

- Skopje. Macedonian public enterprises were making a lot of money
- in the border trade with Bulgaria. Over 200 enterprises earnt
- $120,000 US in two months.

- MACEDONIAN DELEGATION IN HUNGARY

- Skopje. The Undersecretary of the Macedonian Foreign Ministry,
- Risto Nikovski, met with his Hungarian counterpart, Ivan Baba,
- in Budapest.
- Nikovski's delegation discussed the possibility of recognition
- for Macedonia, the republic's application for admission to CSCE
- and the UN, and ties between Skopje and Budapest.
- Ivan Baba said his country was interested in working with
- Macedonia, especially in the area of trade , and was interested
- in good communications links. The Macedonian delegation was
- informed that Hungary would allow goods to be delivered to
- Macedonia.

- ENORMOUS GROWTH IN ILLEGAL ARMS DEALING

- Skopje. There has been an enormous growth in the illegal arms and
- ammunition trade in the Republic of Macedonia in the past two
- years, according to a statement issued by the Macedonian Interior
- Ministry.
- The Interior Ministry is responsible for police and the
- intelligence service.
- Smugglers from Macedonia and neighbouring states are using the
- republic as a transit point for weapons sales to hotspots in the
- former Yugoslavia.
- The weapons have mostly been bought from Western Europe, Greece,
- Turkey, and recently purchased from Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-
- Hercegovina and Serbia.
- In the past 21 months, there 26 instances of illegal arms and
- ammunition trading in the republic. Fifty-two people have been
- arrested, and 54 machine guns and automatic rifles, 27 army
- rifles, 96 pistols and revolvers, 16 tear gas pistols, 18 bombs
- and 2 kilograms of gunpowder and a large quantity of ammunition
- were confiscated. Seventeen smuggling gangs were uncovered, of
- which 90% of gang members were ethnic Albanians, who did most of
- their business in Western Macedonia. These gangs also dealt in
- drugs.

- EXHIBITION OF MACEDONIAN ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY IN ISTANBUL

- Skopje. From 6 to 28 November, an exhibition of artistic
- photographs by Blagoj Drnkov, a Macedonian, will be held in the
- Turkish city of Istanbul. The exhibition is titled "Cultural
- riches of Macedonia," has been organised by the Museum of the
- City of Skopje.

- CROP PLANTING BELOW REQUIREMENT

- Skopje. This autumn, only 41% of planned crops were sowed in the
- Republic of Macedonia. This situation has been caused by the oil
- embargo imposed by Greece, and a large drought which hit
- Macedonia.
