  28. Greek government, acting through  Bugnion,  a  Belgian  patents,
  29. trademarks  and  designs  agency,  sent a letter threatening MILS
  30. with court action if it did not stop using the  term  "Macedonia"
  31. in  its  name.  The letter claimed that MILS (Macedonian Informa-
  32. tion and Liaison Service) infringed upon the trade  name  of  the
  33. Greek  operated  Agency  Macedoine Press/Macedonian Press Agency,
  34. which it is claimed was  registered  with  Benelux  countries  on
  35. 15/10/92.  However, the trade name Makedonija (Macedonia) was re-
  36. gistered with the Belgian authorities in  1986.  Makedonija  is a
  37. cultural,sporting and religious association set up by Macedonians
  38. from the Republic of Macedonia living  in  Belgium.   Agency  Ma-
  39. cedoine  Press  belongs  to the Ministry of the Prime Minister of
  40. Greece, and deals with information bulletins, journalism...

  42. The letter makes the following declarations: "Reading your  docu-
  43. ment,  it  seems that a lot of "products" are similar to these of
  44. our client. That's why we would like to ask you to avoid all  ac-
  45. tivity that could lead to confusion for the larger public and for
  46. specialists, such as the press...  The use of all names referring
  47. to  "Macedonia" and for this reason leading to confusion with the
  48. marque (trade name) of our client, should be avoided by  you  and
  49. will  lead to court action by our client."  The Director of MILS,
  50. Mr Ljupco Naumovski, said that "if the Greek operated Agency  Ma-
  51. cedoine  Press was distributing similar media documents and news,
  52. then the Greek government would support basic  human  rights  for
  53. ethnic  Macedonians  in  Greece,  and  would  have recognised the
  54. Republic of Macedonia by now".

  56. It is believed the Greek government wants MILS put out of  opera-
  57. tion  because it provides the international media and politicians
  58. with news about the Republic of Macedonia. A recent trial against
  59. two  Macedonian  human  rights activists in Greece was given wide
  60. publicity by MILS, and this angered the Greek  government.   MILS
  61. is a non-government organisation funded by the public, in partic-
  62. ular Australian-Macedonians.

  64. It would be ludicrous to suggest that anyone can  hold  copyright
  65. on a name of a country. For instance, who actually owns the terms
  66. Greece, Europe or evenAmerica?!
