- In every market, there are 2 service providers. you should check
- rates with both of them. In general, they will charge you a monthly
- fee plus airtime for any calls (calls you make, calls you receive).
- When you sign up for service, you will have to agree to use the service
- for a fixed minimum period of time. This can vary betweeen service
- providers. Here in Chicago, Ameritech Mobile requires a one year
- commitment, and Cellular One requires a 5 month commitment.

- As long as you are in your home system, i.e. the system where you
- signed up for service, you can make and receive calls to and from
- anywhere that you can reach with your non-cellular phones. Ask
- your service provider about "roaming". Roaming is the term for using
- your phone outside of your local switch coverage area. For example,
- if my phone service is based in Chicago and I take my phone to
- Milwaukee, that is roaming, and special procedures may apply. If
- I just drive around Chicago and the suburbs, that is not roaming.
- My service guide indicates that I can not accept collect calls on
- my cellular phone, but that is one of the few restrictions that I
- can think of.

- There are several things to think about, such as whether you want one
- installed in your car, a phone in a bag, or a handheld unit. In
- general, the Motorola phones are considered to be the sturdiest and
- the best. There are some magazines (Cellular Times?) that do comparison
- articles from time to time.
