- Yesterday (10th) there was a huge general strike and rally held in Melbourne.
- 150,000 filled the streets and 400,000 went on strike. The reason? Well the
- newly elected state government believes that because they were elected by
- a 60% majority and because they control both houses of parliament, it means
- they can introduce whatever legislation they deem necessary to "improve" the
- economy. The main legislation that people were protesting over is concerned
- with making strikes illegal and introducing employment contracts for each
- employee. These contracts are drawn up by the employer and if the employee
- doesn't agree with the terms ( which can included no overtime payments, 40
- hours work a week on any days, fines for lateness, disobedience and for
- striking) If the employees don't agree to the conditions they are forced to
- "resign" then they have to wait 3 months for unemployment benefits.
-
- Basically this legislation is philosophy driven, and will do practically
- nothing to improve the economy. It will make workers slaves and we will
- be punished for withdrawing our labour.
-
- It was a great day yesterday. Lots of chanting and singing of "Solidarity
- for ever". I didn't think I'd ever see such a class division in this
- country, but people were abusing the rich and yelling at the scabs. It felt
- great. Unfortunately it will not do much as the legislation is being
- passed as I write this. Oh did I mention that whilst this government was
- taking away from the workers they raised their own pays?
-
-
- Oh life will be a bundle of fun around here in the years to come.
