This information appeared on Native Net last spring when the forum was
scheduled for September. Unfortunately, the forum had to be rescheduled.
The new date is February 5-6, 1993.

AMERICAN INDIAN ACADEMIA AND COMMUNITY
MAINTAINING CONNECTIONS

A NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT FORUM

The above event, an expansion of the Cornell Council of American Indian
Graduate and Professional Students (CAIGPS) forum, where members volunteer
to discuss their research with their peers, is scheduled for February
5-6, 1993. The multi-disciplinary forum provides Native American graduate
and professional students and selected undergraduates the opportunity to
present their work, related to Native American issues, in an academic
setting for purposes of interacting with their peers, the American
Indian community, and respected academicians.

The overall goal of the paper presentation series is to establish a network
of scholarly American Indian students. Additionally, forum participation
will help students become academically prepared for future publications
and presentations to professional societies, and will provide recognition
to participating presenters as potential publishable authors.

A call for proposals has gone out to major colleges and universities across
the nation, to member institutions of the SUNY Western Conference, and to
member institutions of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium
(AIHEC). Student scholars are asked to submit proposals for a one hour
presentation (question and answer time included) of their work in any
field. The conference theme of American Indian scholars maintaining
connections with the American Indian community is expected to be reflected
in the content of the paper presentations. As well as learning the
academic focus of Native American scholars in other institutions of
higher education, CAIGPS members are interested in learning:

   1. TO WHAT EXTENT NATIVE AMERICAN SCHOLARS HAVE MAINTAINED THEIR
CONNECTIONS WITH THEIR RESPECTIVE AMERICAN INDIAN COMMUNITIES; AND,

   2. IF SCHOLARS CAN STILL RELATE TO THEIR NATIVE AMERICAN PEERS IN
OTHER DISCIPLINES.

Ten scholars (two undergraduates and eight graduate or professional
students) will be selected to present their papers at the forum. Some
of the papers may be selected to present their papers at the forum.

special edition of the AKWE:KON Journal, a publication of the American
Indian Program at Cornell University.

The event is co-sponsored by CAIGPS and the SUNY Western Consortium
with assistance from the Cornell American Indian Program. Transportation
is the responsibility of the forum participants; however, the selected
presenters will be provided meals and lodging at their request.
