- FCNL LEGISLATIVE UPDATE -- [11/06/92]
-
- This is the Friends Committee on National Legislation,
- with updated legislative information. To speak with a
- staff member, call (202) 547-6000.
-
- This message was prepared at 4:00 p.m on Friday,
- November 6. As FCNL staff and general committee will
- be gathering for our annual meeting next week, there
- will not be a new update prepared until Friday,
- Novermber 20. This message contains action suggestions
- for the post-election period:
-
- GREETINGS TO YOUR NEWLY ELECTED MEMBERS OF CONGRESS:
- Through redistricting or electoral reshuffling, many
- Friends find themselves with new representatives
- and/or senators in Congress. Now is the time to get
- acquainted. Now is the key time to help shape the
- perceptions of your congressional delegation about
- what the people back home want and expect.
-
- Two action suggestions:
- (1) Between now and December, set up a meeting in
- your local area with at least one Senator or your
- Representative. Prepare with a small group to present
- a few top priority concerns in a clear and concise
- manner. Leave some written information with your new
- representative -- an FCNL newsletter or background
- document, something you have written, or a clipping
- from a local paper that relates to your concern. Make
- this the first of several periodic meetings with the
- same legislator. Begin to build a long-term
- consultative relationship.
-
- (2) Submit a letter to the editor or an op-ed piece
- to your local paper, expressing hopes or concerns for
- the coming Congressional session. When the item
- appears, send it with a cover letter to your new
- representative and senators.
-
- GREETINGS TO THE NEW PRESIDENT: Planning for the early
- days of the Clinton administration will take place
- during the next several weeks. By January, Clinton's
- transition team will have shaped many of his policy
- priorities and legislative initiatives. One of FCNL's
- primary concerns is shifting the federal budget
- towards human needs and reinvestment in our
- communities. The new administration will not be able
- to respond to these needs, or to give the critical
- attention to the looming federal debt, unless Clinton
- submits a budget that makes major cuts in military
- spending.
-
-
- ACTION: Write President-elect Clinton now, while he is
- formulating his presidential agenda, and urge him to
- submit a budget that reflects the real needs of
- American citizens. Only by drastically reducing the
- military budget will the Clinton administration have
- an opportunity to make the changes this country needs
- to see. Send a copy of your letter to your
- congressional representatives.
- Clinton/Gore Headquarters, P.O. Box 615, Little Rock,
- Arkansas, 72203. Phone #: 501-372-2292.
