- Trying to pump out the election results Tuesday night, I learned it
- really is true that Murphy was an optimist. From the modem that
- wouldn't hang up to the periodic collapses of the newsroom computer
- network, everything seemed to conspire against us. The World public-
- access site groaned under the onslaught of thousands of finger and
- telnet requests (around 9 p.m., I couldn't even get through to upload the
- results that everybody was calling in to get). And then there were all
- those Libertarians who kept asking (some more politely than others):
- "Where are the Marrou numbers?"
-
- But in the end, it all seemed to work out well. Barry Shein at the World
- performed some magic on his system to reduce the load so that I could get
- the results in and others could get them out. Helen Rose and Chris Davis
- at the Electronic Frontier Foundation quickly hacked together a second
- "election" address for people to use. Our network problems ended when the
- newspaper computer guru walked into the newsroom. And I found the re-set
- button on the modem.
-
- All told, it looks as if at least 50,000 queries came into the World
- and EFF machines. My thanks to all who accessed the service!
-
- Now as for you Libertarians, I apologize for not having any Marrou
- numbers. But honest, I'm not part of some eeevill Anit-Libertarian
- Media Conspiracy. I don't have much to do with political coverage at
- all at my newspaper or anywhere else (and for what it's worth, the
- Middlesex News BBS carried Marrou position papers alongside those of
- Bush and Clinton).
-
- Here's what happened: We relied on Associated Press for our national
- numbers. AP said it would send out third-party numbers starting at
- 10:30 p.m. They didn't. I have no idea why. But if their newsroom was
- anything like ours, I bet what happened was that some harried editor
- decided at the last minute that his staff had better things to do than
- worry about relatively trivial numbers. In our case, that meant not
- putting the number of blank votes in our tally charts; in AP's case,
- that probably meant the third-party numbers. For what it's worth,
- here, finally, are those numbers:
-
- Bill Clinton, Dem 43,688,671 - 43 percent
- George Bush, GOP (i) 38,109,410 - 37 percent
- Ross Perot, Ind 19,089,432 - 19 percent
