  19. There has been significant network traffic lately speculating on
  20. the current positioning and future support of SunSoft Windows
  21. Toolkits, specifically related to XView and OLIT. As with most
  22. rumors, much of the network traffic relating to XView has been
  23. in error. The brief statement below should put to rest the gossip,
  24. innuendo and inaccurate conclusions, and allow developers to
  25. get back to real work.

  27. WINDOWS TOOLKITS POSITIONING
  28. ----------------------------
  29. OLIT is being offered by SunSoft as the recommended procedural toolkit for
  30. the X-community. The principal engineering effort for technical
  31. enhancements and new features is on OLIT. It is NOT the intention
  32. to have customers migrate their current XView applications to OLIT.
  33. We strongly encourage developers to use OLIT for any NEW
  34. applications that are being developed to take advantage of many new
  35. features and functionalities, and maintain compliance with the rapidly
  36. evolving STANDARDS for GUI development.

  38. XView is alive and well! Certain technical enhancements, detailed
  39. below, and sustaining engineering effort will continue, for the
  40. foreseeable future.  Software developers will be able to continue to
  41. develop, compile and run XView applications on the Solaris 2.x platform
  42. into the foreseeable future. The principal caveat is that only limited
  43. new functionalities and additional features will appear in XView after
  44. Solaris 2.2. Software developers will still be able to continue
  45. application development and distribution of XView-based applications
  46. even after this transpires. However, to make effective use of many
  47. technical enhancements, developers are strongly encouraged to use OLIT
  48. for new applications development.

  50. FUTURE SUPPORT AND PLANS FOR XVIEW

  52. These concerns are best summarized by briefly answering the 
  53. following frequently asked questions about XView.

  55. Q1. Is XView still supported by SunSoft?
  56. A1. Yes, SunSoft supports XView and will continue sustaining
  57.     engineering effort for the foreseeable future.

  59. Q2. Will there be more releases of XView?
  60. A2. Yes, there will be new releases of XView in the future with limited
  61.     new functionality.

  63. Q3. I've heard that XView may no longer be shipped after this year.
  64.     Is this true?
  65. A3. No this is NOT true!  XView will continue to be a standard part of
  66.     future Solaris operating system releases.

  68. Q4. When will XView be EOLed?
  69. A4. There are no EOL plans for XView, nor are we considering it
  70.     in the foreseeable future.

  72. Q5. Will XView source continue to be publicly available?
  73. A5. Yes, XView source will continue to be available on the MIT tape
  74.     and other public ftp sites.

  76. Q6. Will there be any new features added to XView?
  77. A6. Yes, some new features will be added to XView.  Features that are
  78.     currently under development are:
  79.        Fully integrated File Chooser object
  80.        Keyboard Accelerators for menus
  81.        Full Asian & European languages support

  83. Q7. Should I rewrite my application in OLIT?
  84. A7. No, we are not recommending rewriting existing XView applications in
  85.     OLIT.  However, we are strongly recommending using OLIT for developing
  86.     NEW applications.  Also, we strongly recommend use of OpenWindows
  87.     Developer's Guide for any GUI development.  Doing so allows quick
  88.     development and in addition enables smooth migration between OPEN LOOK
  89.     toolkits should one choose to migrate to OLIT in order to take advantage
  90.     of future enhancements.

  92. Q8. Is there a significant engineering effort behind XView?
  93. A8. A significant corps of SunSoft engineers are working in the XView
  94.     group to make the product stable. This includes sustaining
  95.     engineering, fixing bugs, addressing performance issues and
  96.     compliance with other standardization activities.

  98. Q9. What is Sun's current feeling about OPEN LOOK?
  99. A9. SunSoft and it's parent company SMI continue to stand firmly behind
  100.     OPEN LOOK and is committed to it's success.

  102. I sincerely hope this Windows Toolkits positioning statement
  103. and the role XView will play in future will reassure developers that 
  104. SunSoft is aware of the needs in the marketplace and will continue
  105. to strive in offering innovative technologies in a systematic manner.
