- Last week I upgraded a cluster of DECsystems and DECstations from
- Ultrix 4.0 to Ultrix 4.3. An installation that went smoothly.
-
- But I do like feedback on the following question: why is Ultrix 4.3,
- especially DECwindows, such a memory hog?
-
- Some figures (3.1/0.8 means: SZ=3.1M, RSS=0.8M):
-
- Program 4.0 version 4.3 version
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- vmunix 2.8M 3.6M on disk
- genvmunix 3.9M 2.8M on disk
- dxsession 3.1/0.8 4.5/1.3
- xconsole -- 1.6/1.1
- dxterm 3.5/1.2 4.3/2.4 xterm is 0.9/0.8
- mwm 2.7/1.5 3.3/1.3 ctwm is 0.7/0.6
- dxwm 3.0/0.6 3.9/1.1
- Xcfb / Xws 3.5/ 5.5/1.1
-
- Why? What functionality do I get compared to the 4.0 version?
- No, I don't think that Motif look-and-feel can be blamed for this.
- (And don't tell me to discard DECwindows, we probably will.)
