- Just thought that a few of you out there would like to know about the IIVX
- and AUX 3.0...
-
- First the issues that have been flying...
-
- 1. the VX uses only a 16 bit memory bus - UNTRUE... it uses the same
- memory bus structure that the CI does, with the exception of
- changes to incorporate the cache card on to the Cpu board.
- This is per the dealer support line that was contacted when I became
- paranoid over my choise in ordering a IIVX instead of a trusty IICi
-
- 2. the VX memory bus runs at 1/2 speed of the processor clock... UNTRUE
- again the same as the IICI it runs at the same 32 Mhz as the processor,
- and again this was obtained from the dealer support network.
-
- 3. Aux may not run on the IIVX - UNTRUE ... IT MOST DEFINITELY WILL NOT EVEN
- INSTALL ON THE VX... SORRY FOR THE BAD NEWS.
-
- I talked with the dealer support line and their answer on this was the
- following:
-
- "There are NO (very interesting statement) new releases that will be done
- on AUX 3.0. Since the VX will require a new release to correct the differ-
- ences of the hardware, THE IIVX WILL NOT BE SUPPORTED UNDER AUX 3.0."
-
- That is the official statement.. so ... What does that mean... is AUX 3.0
- dead... no more releases... no more fixes... what? According to Apple it
- appears to be dead. I find this rather DISGUSTING for the following
- reasons:
- 1. All platforms that AUX 3.0 runs on except the Quadra
- are either currently discontinued or are planned to be
- discontinued (rumor has it that the IICI will go away in
- early 93)... so if you want AUX you have a SINGLE PLATFORM
- 2. Recently Apple sent out a mail order catalog which listed
- AUX as a product that you could buy... $695 I think was the
- price... looked good ... BUT the add said "AUX is
- supported on the SE/30, ALL Macintosh II models, and the
- QUADRA models...
-
- WELL, APPLE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG BUT THE IIVX IS A
- MACINTOSH II MODEL IS IT NOT !!!??? AND YOU ADVERTISE IT
- IN THE VERY SAME CATALOG AS THE AUX 3.0 OFFERING !!!!!!!!
-
- So if you are listening Apple... lets get together on
- what you are selling. I bought this VX based on the fact
- that Apple advertised AUX to be supported.
- 3. I spoke with another Apple person who indicated that the
- release dates on the new Quadras (lower prices have been
- indicated) are going to be delayed... That means that I
- either buy a IICI to run AUX and loose a large part of my
- investment when or if it is discontinued, or I buy a Quadra
- at the high price today only to have it devalue in the face
- of them more powerful, or less expensive new machines.
- I know this is not an unusual situation, but it is annoying.
-
- Now what can we do about all of this...
-
-
- Well if Apple is going to make the Quadra the baseline AUX system, they
- need to be open with all of us and Announce it !!. Then we can all make
- a good decision.
- Talking to an Application Engineer with Apple I have been made aware that
- the best way to get changes out of Apple is to let them know IN MASS that
- we are not happy. This AUX situation that is happening is certainly
- not going to heip sale for Apple in the face of the other Unix's that
- are being released. Take for example the USL/Novell entry in the market
- UNIXWARE... similar price to AUX, runs on almost any PC_Compatable and
- has 3 great, very nicely implemented GUI interfaces....
-
-
- APPLE IF YOU ARE LISTENING.. lets talk marketting here.... you are cutting
- your own throat over AUX.
