  36. Artists, designers, scientists, engineers an
  37. d educators share the problem
  38. of moving information from one mind to another.
  39. Traditionally, they have
  40. used pictures, words, demonstrations, music and dance
  41. to communicate
  42. imagery.  However, expressing complex notions such as God and in
  43. finity
  44. or a seeminglywell defined concept such as a flower can present
  45. challen
  46. ges which far exceed their technical skills.

  48. The explosive use of computers a
  49. s visualization and expression tools has
  50. compounded this problem.  In hypermedi
  51. a, multimedia and virtual reality
  52. systems vast amounts of information confront
  53. the observer or participant. 
  54. Wading through a multitude of simultaneous images
  55.  and sounds in
  56. possibly unfamiliar representations, a confounded user asks: Wha
  57. t does
  58. it all mean?
  59.  
  60. Since image construction, transmission, reception, decip
  61. herment and
  62. ultimate understanding are complex tasks strongly influenced by
  63. ph
  64. ysiology, education and culture; and since electronic media radically
  65. amplify e
  66. ach processing step, then we, as electronic communicators, must
  67. determine the f
  68. undamental paradigms for composing imagery for
  69. understanding.

  71. Therefore, the
  72.  purpose of this conference is to bring together a breadth
  73. of disciplines, incl
  74. uding, but not limited to, the physical, biological and
  75. computational sciences,
  76.  technology, art, psychology, philosophy and
  77. education, in order to define and
  78. discuss the issues essential to image
  79. understanding within the computer graphic
  80. s context.  To this end we seek
  81. proposals for individual presentations, panel d
  82. iscussions, static displays,
  83. interactive environments, performances and beyond.
