| Does the DAT drive supplied by SGI use the same format and tape size as other vendor's drives? Specifically HP's DAT? Are there any other problems I might encounter when trying to transfer files from an HP 9000-400 to a Indigo R4k via DAT?

| I do this! It works fine from HP to Indigo. However, from Indigo
| to HP, no go. I must do dd if=/dev/rmt/0m of=foo.tar bs=1024k

We default to a block size of 256K when writing tar tapes to DAT.
I've heard rumors that HP's tar can't handle a blocking factor
of 512 (b 512). If true, the solution is to simply use
an explict argument when writing tar tapes for export to HP
systems (e.g., tar cvb 64 filelist), or whatever works with the
HP. 20 would certainly work, but would not give you terribly
good throughput.
