I should have said that I used the instructions provided with the CD for making
a minimal 3.0 system.  By following the directions there, I don't recall ever
having to use the 3.0 Upgrade utility app.  I think that unless there is a
certain amount of space on the volume in which you upgrade to/install 3.0, the
program will install the minimal version (no compiler, no extra stuff, just
what you need to run programs already compiled).
