- Interesting comments. I agree that the new SUNS do look interesting but...
-
- I use (every day) Silicon Graphics PI's and Indigo's, Sun SSII's, PC's and
- my NeXT. From the point of view of linpack and specmarks it is true that
- NeXT looks weak, but consider how a PC compares.
-
- What is the spec rating of a state of the are 486 PC? Well there isn't one
- cause the spec ratings don't run there at all. But just from seat of the
- pants feel you can tell that a NeXT is faster!
-
- NeXT is still where it hase alway been between a personal computer and the
- state of the art eingineering workstation. What matters to me is that I can
- use the NeXT to replace my PC,(or mac) and my SUN with one box. Consider
- when you go out to buy your SUN how you are going to copy files onto the
- floppy disk. (mkfs ? mount as root?) Or how you could compose a simple
- note with some nice fonts. Or check the spelling in a mail message. I wish
- I could do this now, but since I'm using a SUN I'd have to go an buy all
- that stuff before I could begin to try to do that .
-
- It is the usability + power of the NeXT that makes it so good not one or the
- other. If you dissect the feature set of a NeXT, then feature by feature you
- can find *A* machine with a better implementation of that feature. BUT try
- to find another machine with all of these good things in ONE and only ONE
- package and that package will be BLACK!
-
- Of course this dosn't mean that I wouldn't like a faster machine :-)
