  30. MIPS stuff is also made by Integrated Device Technology Inc., LSI Logic Corp.,
  31. NEC Electronics Corp., Performance Semiconductor Corp., Siemens Components Inc.,
  32. and Toshiba Corp (this from the MIPS press announcement.)  Folklore has it
  33. that MIPS put too much into the R6000, which is how they got into trouble.
  34. That effort (like the ECL SPARC and DGs ECL 88100) appear to be severely dead now.
  35. SGI isnt much of a competitor to NeXT in that SGI makes virtually nothing
  36. under $10K and NeXT makes virtually nothing over $10K (for a base box.)
  37. The R4000 line will need generate money to fund the kind of chip development
  38. it will need to stay competative; NeXT can provide some of that volume as it
  39. grows.  Then one starts to speculate about a NeXT/SGI hybrid......  -Steve
