- MIPS stuff is also made by Integrated Device Technology Inc., LSI Logic Corp.,
- NEC Electronics Corp., Performance Semiconductor Corp., Siemens Components Inc.,
- and Toshiba Corp (this from the MIPS press announcement.) Folklore has it
- that MIPS put too much into the R6000, which is how they got into trouble.
- That effort (like the ECL SPARC and DGs ECL 88100) appear to be severely dead now.
- SGI isnt much of a competitor to NeXT in that SGI makes virtually nothing
- under $10K and NeXT makes virtually nothing over $10K (for a base box.)
- The R4000 line will need generate money to fund the kind of chip development
- it will need to stay competative; NeXT can provide some of that volume as it
- grows. Then one starts to speculate about a NeXT/SGI hybrid...... -Steve
